August 21st - Reflection

Luke 6:1-5 (NRSV)
Picking grain on the sabbath

One sabbath while Jesus was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked some heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them. But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?" Jesus answered, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave some to his companions?" Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."

Reflection
The sabbath, a day set aside for God to rest after creation. A day graciously given to his creation for rest. I think of the sabbath as a period of rest that God graciously provides after work to reflect, honor, worship and give thanks to God for all God has done. A day to praise God for working in and through and many times on me. The sabbath, to me, is a day that I celebrate God's grace.

As Jesus states, the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath, and I'm just the one who wonderfully gets to receive this gift of the sabbath. So why not rub and few grains together and rejoice in all that God has created and the new live God has given?

Seems like a great idea to celebrate the day with the makings of some of that bread, with the Savior. Thanks be to God!

Prayer
Lord, thanks for the sabbath, I will cherish the gift and keep it holy. --- Amen
