August 7th - 11th Daily Hymn, Readings, Word, Psalm and Prayer

A brief note: I was privileged to be elected as a Voting Member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) for the 10th Churchwide Assembly by the Southern Ohio Synod. The Assembly took place August 6th through the 11th. Over one thousand elected Voting Members assemble to deal with the reports and actions for the National Church of the ELCA. This assembly gathered at the Navy Pier in Chicago. The days were intense but deeply gratifying. We prayed, sang hymns and had Bible Studies throughout this time as we made decisions regarding policy, report and procedures. The Holy Spirit was present. Each day a Communion Service was held. We worshipped as the Body of Christ in this place. We elected a Churchwide Bishop and Secretary. We adopted a social statement, approved budgets and deliberated as a the faithful people of God. The following Hymns and reflections are hymns used during worship or during the plenary sessions. I am honored and humbled to have had this opportunity to be called to this "Sent" Church. Thanks be to God!

August 4th Daily Hymn, Readings, Word, Psalm and Prayer

Hymn of the Day
Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee. Take my life, that I may be consecrated, Lord to thee, take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.
--- --- ---
Readings of the Day
2 Corinthians 4.1-5.10-But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus; sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death works in us, but life in you.
2 Kings 17-So one of the priests whom they had carried away into exile from Samaria came and lived at Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.
Micah 6-He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Colossians 3.1-11-Set you mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
--- --- ---
God's Word of the Day
You need to trust Me. I love you!
--- --- ---
Psalm of the Day
I need to trust You.
I'm so confused.
I see people I love, come to my daughter and take away one of the few things she clings to.
Just to justify the management of another person's actions.
In attempts to be fair to all.
What is fairness?
Who says things are fair?
Is it fair that my daughter has a mental illness?
Is it fair that she wants to serve God and can't at times?
What is fairness Lord?

I need to trust You.
I want to strike out with words of revenge and hatred.
I wonder if I should be kind or shout injustice for my daughter.
I don't speak up. I sit in silence acting kind and chatting.
I sin, Lord. I sin in so many ways.
Forgive my actions and forgive my silence.
I need Your help.
I need Your guidance.
I need Your Love and Peace.
I yearn for compassion for my daughter, my family and for me.

I need to trust You.
I am an earthen vessel.
You became an earthen vessel for me.
You know what I'm going through.
You know my frustration and pain.
You lived this for me.
You died for me to show me Life.
You have lived this death of mine to save me.
You are my Savior and Redeemer.
Death is working in me but Life in You.

Forgive me Lord for my exile from You.
Forgive me Lord for my hatred and sin.
Forgive me Lord for my silence.
Forgive me Lord for my thoughts of revenge.
Take this sinful life and kill it!
Take this sin and give me Life.
Take my life and replace it with Yours.
Take me and use me to fulfill Your glory.
Teach me the humble way to live.
Show me how to act in Your Love.

I trust You, Lord!
Teach me to walk in justice.
Teach me to walk in truth.
Teach me to walk humbly with You.
You are my Guide and my Light.
I will follow You.
I trust You, Lord!
I have seen Your kindness.
I trust You, Lord!
I have seen You Love!

I trust You, Lord!
I set my mind on You!
I see Your face of pain.
I see Your face of compassion.
I see Your face of Love.
I see Jesus!
I see Your death in me.
I trust You, Lord!
I trust You, Lord!
I trust You, Lord!

Prayer of the Day
I trust You, Lord! ---Amen

Psalm of the Day
Lord, creator of the Church.
Be with me as I use the gifts You have given.
Be present when I go out to spread Your Peace and Love.
I praise You in the morning.
I praise You in the noon time.
I praise You in the eve.

Gift me with the compassion of Jesus.
Send me with this compassion to those in need.
Gift me with the peace of the Spirit.
Send me with this peace to those in need.
Lead me in Your mission.
Guide my words and actions.

Hear my song of glory.
See my life of praise.
Taste my love and compassion.
Feel my love for You.
Rejoice with me in Your presence.
Know of my trust in You.

Spirit, it's tough going right now for me. Other's say words and conduct actions that deeply hurt me and my family. Guide me with forgiveness. Guide me with compassion. Lead me to take a stand when needed. Show me when to keep silent. Help me to see the Love and Peace of God. Forgive me when I fail. ---Amen

I am the Word that leads all to freedom, I am the peace the world cannot give. I will call your name, embracing all your pain. Stand up, now walk and live! Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name, Come and follow me, I will bring you home; I love you and you are mine. ("You Are Mine" - Text: David Haas, b. 1957)
--- --- ---

2 Corinthians 1.1-2.4-Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

God's Word of the Day
When you are angry, I'll show You the better way in Love.
--- --- ---
Psalm of the Day
Lord, I'm so angry at You.
I'm angry with You and Your children.
I'm angry with the cruel people in my life.
I'm angry about all the pain and suffering.
I'm angry Lord.

I'm angry and hateful and need help.
You seem so distant.
You seem so far away.
I don't think You even care!
I'm angry Lord.

This just isn't fair.
I don't deserve to be treated this way!
I hate this life and what it has become.
I can't stand it any more!
I'm angry Lord.

In my anger You return a Word of freedom.
In my pain You call me to embrace the pain.
In my anger You call me by name.
In my anger You are present with me.
I don't know how You put up with me.

In You I am called.
In You I am restored.
In You I am brought home and loved.
In the midst of my shouts of anger You show love.
I don't know why You put up with me.

Through my anger You continue to show me how to love others.
Through my anger You send me to those in pain.
Through my anger You bring me to Your mountain.
Through my anger You calm the storm.
I love You in the midst of my anger.
--- --- ---
Prayer of the Day
Forgive my anger and selfishness. Bring me to Your mountain and fill me with the Light of Joy only in and through You. I'm sorry! ---Amen

August 1st Daily, Hymn, Readings, Word, Psalm and Prayer

Hymn of the Day
In what you give us, Lord, to do, together or alone, in old routines or ventures new, may we not cease to look to you, the cross you hung upon, all you endeavored done. ("How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord" - Text Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000)
--- --- ---
Readings of the Day
1 Corinthians 16-Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be one in love.
2 Kings 12-13-Then Jehoahaz entreated the favor of the LORD, and the LORD listened to him...
Micah 3-...I am filled with power---with the Spirit of the LORD---and with justice and courage...
Matthew 5.43-48-But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you...
--- --- ---
God's Word of the Day
Maintain your focus on Me even in the storm.
--- --- ---
Psalm of the Day
It seems too much to concentrate on You and the cross.
It seems too much to focus on You.
Life is hard and I just don't get why.
I try to make You my center yet the pain in and around me is too much.
Why me? Why not this pain and suffering on those who don't believe in You?

In the pain and suffering I find Your presence.
I discover that You didn't bring this pain and suffering.
You are here and guide me through it all.
You are here and know what it's like.
You are here out of love.

You help me to be alert and stand firm in You.
You guide me and listen to my complaints.
You fill me with power, justice and courage to come through the pain.
I find that I am built up and strengthened in You.
In the pain and suffering I find Your love.

Now I know how to treat others.
I have been shown Your love to share.
Now I know how to love my enemies.
Now I go in Your way.
Now I go in Your will.
--- --- ---
Prayer of the Day
Life is hard sometimes. I stray and sin. My anger burns toward You and I ask You to forgive this anger and hate in me. Build me, fill me and send me in Your truth. Forgive me and use me still. ---Amen
