April 30th Reflection

Saturday 4/30/2005

Acts 13.26-52 - Listen to this message about how to be saved, because it is for everyone--- The leaders didn’t realize who Jesus was- they didn’t understand- so they condemned Jesus- Jesus was put to death- Jesus was placed in a tomb- Bt God raised him from death!- Then Jesus appeared to his followers for many days- God has kept his promise- God raised Jesus from death and will never let his body decay- everyone else’s body decays - but not Jesus- My friends, the message is that Jesus can forgive your sins! - Everyone who has faith in Jesus is set free!!!- After the sermon-- some people accepted the gift - some people rejected it-- God gives each of us a choice-- we can turn to him and graciously, humbly accept this great gift freely given to us -- or doubt it- don’t believe it and turn away. I accept the gift- you go ahead too-- it’ll make you happy beyond imagination!

Joshua 20-21 - Safe towns -- they were set up for accidental killings- say I was working with someone- started up a machine we were working on to troubleshoot a problem - but I failed to block a ram that comes down to punch a part- my friend as part of his body under this ram and I turn the machine on thinking the ram is blocked- my friend is killed-- I didn’t do it on purpose- I wasn’t trying to kill my friend- yea- it was a stupid mistake on both our parts - but it was an accident-- at the time in the Bible we are talking about each family could appoint a person called the “redeemer”-- the life was considered in the blood- so the blood of the dead one had an impact on the family-since they are related by blood- the redeemer would be obligated to seek revenge on my and kill me - blood for blood- eye for eye-- all that kind of thing-- well it was an accident-- I didn’t do it on purpose- I loved my friend -- with the Safe towns- I would run to the Safe towns and would be safe from the redeemer until there was a trial-- one other method would be for me to run to an altar and hang on to the altar-- but you are kinda stuck there for a while unit the priest decide what to do with you-- So that’s where the Safe Towns came in-- if it was murder- than your life was taken- if not- you got to stay in the Safe Town until the High Priest died - tempers cooled - then you could go back home-- but in the least God took care of you -- So -- what about today-- this may be strange thinking- I really kill God- with my sinfulness- so I run to the Safe Town-- God now has the right to send someone from his family to redeem -- but instead of chasing me down the redeemer God sends in Jesus - comes to forgive my sin-- to tell me it was all an accident- that I am now free to go home- to live with God again where I belong-- It’s time I come on out of that Safe Town and go home to live with God! ----The next part is about all the towns given to the Levites to live in-- they were spread out all over the place-- as I read these last few chapters- I think - Man! --this is boring stuff! -- but what if I were alive then and was reading this-- it would be pretty exciting- I would have just been in the desert all my life - living in tents- pooping in holes out back - toilet paper??- whatever was available - maybe just a flick of the finger- I don’t know -- wanna shake hands the next time? -- anyway -- all that to set the scene-- now I see that God is giving me a home- a place I can build- get water- wash my hands- cook - sleep- grow food - have fun in private -- all that stuff-- Now read these chapters-- I would be excited to read what God has to say- I’m getting a big huge gift- a huge improvement in my life- scenery to look at when I wake up in the morning- people laughing cause we are all wealthy- no more flinging poop off our fingers -- makes reading these chapters so much easier-- so what about today?--- God is doing the same thing for me- preparing a real special place for me- it’s there now - every once in a while he lets me peek into my room- feel how great it is- look out the windows - look at the scenery - notice the perfumes present - the flowers and trees - hear the birds singing- see friends in my room laughing and telling jokes and playing games with each other- God has this room all prepared for me- I look out another window- if I want I can run downstairs to the yard and join in a game of football with all my friends where were all really good and have a blast all day long ----Now that way of looking at it makes these past few chapters of Joshua take on a little more meaning!--God loves me so much he is and has prepared a room- a Promised Land for me!

Job 30 - Hey!!-- Not a Yo Momma joke -- but a Yo Pappa joke-- Yo Pappa’s so ugly - he’s a disgrace to my sheep dog! --People are making fun of Job now and he is at the bottom of his pit-- so sad!

While I’m living in the meantime -between the acts- may I see God’s current might acts- believe and do the work I’m called to do and set the stage for Jesus - here and now

Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins- Jesus- life-body-blood- give for my sins! -- I am saved through Jesus! -- thanks be to God!

1 Peter 3.13-22 - Don’t worry about harm- be eager to do good! - don’t worry about suffering or intimidation - in your heart sanctify Jesus- in my heart set Jesus apart- at the top of the list- Jesus is my first priority- it’s fine to suffer for doing good- Jesus in my heart - #1 Priority - keep it that way!!

1 Timothy 6.6-11 - I brought nothing into the world- I will take nothing out- be content with food and clothing- forget the temptations of riches and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.

Psalm 98 - Sing-make a joyful noise!- run-play - it’s Saturday - swing- climb the monkey bars- tell of God’s awesome love- put your ear in a shell and hear the ocean roar- blow on a instrument- pound out a tune on a piano- whistle- God made it all--- O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

Prayer - You know- you really do give the words to say - to me and to each of us who follow in your ways - you give me the things to do - the places to go - the time to talk to others - and a wonderful time to play football in your big backyard- just like you gave your early disciples all the words they need to say- send me out this day with the words you want me to say - fill my mind with your thoughts and direct my actions this day - as I meet your children take that opportunity to speak your word through me- fill me with your Spirit- I come to you this morning repenting of all my sin - and ask you to forgive me and love me like you always have- I pray for the needs of those who are sick or mourning the death of a loved one- who are hungry - who are in danger- who are in prison - who are in battles of all kinds - rescue all of your children I pray- show all of us that Promised Land you have prepared for us - and teach us to be kind to one another- to love one another- to gather together like children in play and not fight and fuss over stupid stuff- let each one of your children look into their hearts and see you there - and make you number one in their lives and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness-- for you are God - and for the life, ministry, death, resurrection, ascension and gift of life through Jesus I give you my everlasting praise of joy-- It’s Saturday -- you’re at my door-- can Billy come out to play! -- gotta go Mom-- be back tonight! -- It’s time to play! --- Amen

Re: April 29th Reflection

Joshua 18-19 ....And the mountainous land to the east was filled with the giant Appalachians who lived in the Hocking Hills area. All of this land promised by God was flowing with beer and buckeyes.

Acts 13.1-25 - Saul and Barnabas are chosen to take the message to the Gentiles- they travel- Saul begins a sermon with the history of how God takes care of his Chosen People - in the OT and begins to bring it forward to the present time- I like to hear about how God took care of the people- even though the people may have thought it was rough in the desert- God took care of them

Joshua 18-19 - Ohio was the thirteenth tribe to receive land, and the region went from Cincinnati in the south straight north to Toledo in the north - along the southern border of Lake Erie to Cleveland in the northeast - south to the Ohio River - following the river back south and west to Cincinnati - the Briar Hoppers lived to the south- the evil ones of Michigan lived to the north - the Hoosiers lived to the west - and some other strange tribes were to the east.

Job 29 - Job longs for the times past when he felt close to God- helped others- ministers to others and loves them - a time when he was useful to God-- I feel sorry for Job and want him to get better

While I’m living in the meantime -between the acts- may I see God’s current might acts- believe and do the work I’m called to do and set the stage for Jesus - here and now

The body and blood- the bread and wine- given to me

Acts 17.22-31-God is not far from each one of us- repent and feel God’s presence in you and with you- feel his presence - not in some far away temple- but in your heart

Matthew 17.1-5 - Jesus was transfigured before the disciples- and his face shone like the sun- Lord it is good for us to be here-- God said -- this is my Son - listen to him!

Psalm 63 - My soul thirst for you God - I see your power and glory - your steadfast love is better than life- I praise you with joyful lips

Prayer- Lord send me today - send me to the Gentiles- as I travel today- give me the words you would have me say - help me to tell the story - help me to be bold- let me minister in love-praise and thanksgiving to your gracious power and love- let me set the stage today for you- let the warmth of your love and the brightness of your light shine through me this day - so that others will know it’s all about you- it’s not about me - your steadfast love is better than life and I will praise, honor and obey you forever. --- Amen

April 28th Reflection

Thursday 4/28/2005

Acts 12 - Herod starts in again now- he has James the brother of John’s head cut off- this pleased the Jewish leaders - since Herod saw how he pleased the Jewish leaders - he had Peter arrested- all the disciples and followers gathered together in prayer- Herod was going to have Peter put to death- while Peter was chained and in jail and angel came and released him- at first Peter thought it was all a dream- but it wasn’t- he went to the house where the other disciples were staying - Rhoda answered the door but got so excited about seeing Peter that she forgot to let him in- she ran and told the others but they all said she was crazy!- kinda funny-so Peter keeps knocking- and they finally let him in- then Peter left to hide- So the next day Herod finds out and has the guards put to death- later some people proclaimed Herod to be like a god - and an angel of the Lord struck Herod down because he took the honor that belonged to God- Herod was eaten by worms and died--all the while- God’s message kept spreading

Joshua 15-17 - Look at a map would be easier than reading all these descriptions- but the familiarity with the land does give it more value- this is the land that God had promised- God keeps his side of the deal - in detail! - Hey! - there is mention of the beautiful (maybe she really was??) - Hoglah- one of the daughters of Zelophehad who didn’t have any sons- this posed a problem for inheritance of land -it was all settled though and the daughters got the land

Job 28 - Job sort of gets philosophical here- talks about the wisdom of God- searching for God’s wisdom is harder than finding jewels or precious metals.

While I’m living in the meantime -between the acts- may I see God’s current might acts- believe and do the work I’m called to do and set the stage for Jesus - here and now

Drown my sinful self daily through repentance and let God raise a new self in me to please and honor him.

Psalm 66.8-20 - God will bring me through the big row of trees to the “spacious place” - tell what God has done to all - praise and sing to god- God truly listens and loves me

1 Timothy 1.12-17 - Christ dame into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the foremost.----making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life--it’s all God’s glory

Psalm 27 - God is my salvation- don’t be afraid- I want to live in God’s house all my life and look at his beauty - God takes care of me- I will sing praises to God- wait for the LORD!

Prayer- Lord you release me from prison- you release me from death - through the amazing grace - the death - the love - the suffering and the resurrection of Jesus you have brought me form the death I deserve to life in you - thanks be to God! - I come to you today- I repent of my sins - please forgive me for my neglect - my lack of faith and restore me - lead me into your kingdom - with and through your power - lead me to your spacious place - that we can play and minister to your world- for you are God and I will always sing your praises. ---Amen

April 27th Reflection

Wednesday 4/27/2005

Acts 11.19-30 - The Christians in Jerusalem were now afraid because of what had happened to Stephen- so many scattered to worship in other areas- things were difficult - but the Gospel was spreading all over and to the Gentiles.-- even in persecution - the Gospel and Christianity spreads

Joshua 13-14 - They divide up the land- God shows them how to do it- always get direction and guidance from God- every detail is guided by God- Caleb one of two people allowed to enter the Promised Land from the first group of Israelites- asks for the land promised to him- Caleb is old now- but he is willing to battle the giants for the land God promised

Job 27 - Job blames God for not doing what is right- Job continues to argue his innocence

While I’m living in the meantime -between the acts- may I see God’s current might acts- believe and do the work I’m called to do and set the stage for Jesus - here and now

Trust in God’s Word- receive the life-giving water of Baptism - re-live that moment every day. Every day receive by grace a new birth through the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 4.6-11, 18 - fight the fight-run the race- keep the faith- Jesus saves me

Mark 5.24-34 - Hey! -- There is the woman who touched the cloak of Jesus- meaningful especially today! - she had so much faith that she believed if she but touched Jesus cloak she would be made well- Jesus was in a crowd- yet he knew he had been touched - felt the power go from him-Jesus healed this woman because of her deep faith- have faith-God heals!

Psalm 62 - he alone in my rock and my salvation- LifeKeys last night- we stacked our rocks against the Christ candle- the main rock of salvation- as a monument - as a memory of something great in our lives- God calls all of us and gives us the gifts we need to hear the call and serve, love and obey him.

Prayer- Lord - your healing is awesome and life long- you spread your healing and saving grace to a people who don’t deserve it - I give you thanks for your healing - for your forgiveness- I turn to you and repent of my sins - forgive me- reach out to all your people- show them your love- show them your love through me- let me emulate you - let your light shine through me this day - let your healing presence flow through me this day - let me be your hands and feet this day - I will serve you in your kingdom - I will praise you in your kingdom - I will feel the life-giving water flow over and through me and do your work- I am your servant- use me this day. --- Amen

Re: Focus on God

Bill,
Did you take this picture???? I like to hear how
God is present in your life. I can hear your faith in
your words and see your faith through the picture. It
makes me realize that God is at work all the time and
always present to us if our eyes are open to see him
or hear him.
THANKS BE TO GOD!
Brandie

April 26th Reflection

Tuesday 4/26/2005

Acts 11.1-18 - Peter is back in Jerusalem and the Jewish Christians are angry that he went to Gentiles. But when Peter explains the vision he had of the unclean animals in the sheet and God telling him to eat-- and then how men were sent for him- and how the Holy Spirit came to the Gentiles just as the Spirit came on Pentecost- everyone was happy with this news that Jesus saves the Gentiles too. -- Jesus saving grace is for everyone.

Joshua 11-12 - Another large group of kings heard about Joshua and the Israelite- they formed an alliance and gathered together to fight Israel- God told Joshua not to worry - that he would defeat the enemy- Joshua was to cripple their horses and burn their chariots first- so that’s what Joshua did first with a surprise attack - so God won victory in all the battles Israel and Joshua fought over all the kings

Job 26 - God is awesome and powerful - more than I can ever understand

While I’m living in the meantime -between the acts- may I see God’s current might acts- believe and do the work I’m called to do and set the stage for Jesus - here and now

In Baptism God forgives sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives everlasting salvation to all who believe what he has promised.

Isaiah 52.7-10 - How beautiful are the feet of the messenger- who brings good news and announces salvation- who praises God- and sings for joy- God’s salvation stretches to all the ends of the earth

Matthew 23.34-39 - Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord

Psalm 67 - Make God’s way known on the earth- make known his saving power

Prayer- I rejoice that you came to all peoples of the earth - to save all of us- I rejoice especially that you came to me to save me- you are God- you are all loving and all powerful - you rule over heaven and earth and everything that is in them - be with me this day as I go into your kingdom - as I sing your praises- as I tell of your saving power- as I make known your way on earth. -- Amen

April 25th Reflection

Monday 4/25/2005

Acts 10.34-48 - So Peter has a chance now to tell his story - tell the Gospel and he does- he tells how Jesus came for all people and how only some saw Jesus after the resurrection - how he was one of those people and now his job is to tell others about Jesus - to announce clearly that Jesus is the one God has chosen to judge the living and the dead - and all who have faith in Jesus will have their sins forgiven - then the Holy Spirit took control of all the people listening - these people were Gentiles! - So Peter ordered that they be baptized-- Jesus came for ALL people - Jesus saved all of us- not just the Jews -and the Holy Spirit confirmed it- Thanks be to God!

Joshua 9-10 - So Israel is close to the Gibeonites-- The Gibeonites come up with the idea of pretending that they lived far away -they go into the Israelite camp and talk to Joshua- telling Joshua that they had heard about God and the Israelites- how powerful and all and wanted a treaty since they lived so far away Joshua promised that Israel would not kill the Gibeonites-- come to find out later they were in cities nearby that the Israelites were to take-- Joshua didn’t ask God if he should make the treaty -- so since promises were held in high regard- the Israelites made the Gibeonites slaves of the temple---So now that Israel had control of the Gibeonites a bunch of kings are afraid- they join ranks to fight Israel- well now it all starts - God sends Joshua out - gives victor after victory - it all gets bloody now- the kings are found and Joshua has his soldiers put their feet on the necks of the kings- and kills all these kings-- God gives victory to Israel in town after town and the Israelites trust in God-- even to the point of God sending large hailstones to kill most of the enemy armies-- and the sun and moon standing still for a while so that the enemy can be wiped out-- all pretty amazing stuff with the power of God on display to defend the Israelites-- it’s comforting to know that God is so powerful - just think of how hard God will fight for me- against evil, the devil and all his empty promises-- God will fight even to the death of his Son -- but in the end- the victory of this battle is with Jesus- for he brought out of the battle of death, destruction and shed blood ---- the wonder of life everlasting in God’s kingdom-- the battle is won-- Thanks be to God!!

Job 25 - God is the one to fear- he is the creator of all- trust, love and respect God!

While I’m living in the meantime -between the acts- may I see God’s current might acts- believe and do the work I’m called to do and set the stage for Jesus - here and now

Go-Make-Baptize-- this is a command!

Mark 1.1-15 - Prepare the way of the Lord- baptize- get ready - repent- be forgiven- be humble before God- God is pleased with Jesus- proclaim the good news of God- the kingdom is here now!

Psalm 26 - “ LORD, I love the house in which you dwell“- you have prepared a wonderful upper room for me in that house

Prayer- Lord you give me a story to tell- you give me a life to witness about - you give me the love of Jesus to tell and show to the world- Lord you give me a story to tell of how you came to me - saved me and forgave me- make me bold to tell the story - make me strong to fight the fight- give me all the trust and hope and faith I need to follow you into your kingdom this day - to work in your kingdom here and now - yea- set the stage for your coming - your coming into the lives of people all around me - today and into the timeless future only you can understand- this is your kingdom - and all the glory and power belongs to you - you are God it’s time to go - to make disciples- to baptize and to tell your story -- Amen

April 24th Reflection

Sunday 4/24/2005

Acts 10.1-33 - Cornelius -just some guy-has a vision to send for Peter- so he does- Peter has a vision of a sheet coming down with unclean animals and he is told to eat them- that’s against the law- do it anyway- then the men show up to ask Peter if he will come to see Cornelius-- Peter does- Cornelius tells Peter about his vision - and now it’s set up- Peter is with Gentiles- are the Gentiles part of God’s people now- what does God have to say about this? --I like how the visions of ordinary people call others together- to talk and to listen to what God has to say- what visions of God will anyone see today?-- I like this explanation - it sounds good- A vision is like a dream, but the person having the vision may or may not be asleep. In the Bible, visions happen when God’s Spirit or a messenger of God, such as an angel, speaks to the deepest thoughts of a person and provides a clear picture of something they are to do or say.

Joshua 7-8 - Ai- they send spies to investigate- naw-- only need a few to take that town- Joshua sends a couple thousand-- they get beat and run off- what happened?- where was God almighty?-Joshua goes to God - complaining- God tells Joshua- stop lying there and get up!- God told the Israelites not to take anything for themselves when they defeated Jericho- someone did- and God will point that individual out- depend on God- if God doesn’t think I need it- then don’t take it for myself- I must trust God- Achan was the guilty one- Achan was stoned for what he had done- trust in God alone!- So Joshua sends an army to attack Ai- and lets the people of Ai chase them away - as they are being chased another Israelite army will come in form behind and take the city - then the running army can turn and trap the fighting people of Ai-- God is clever-and God saves

Job 24 - Job is ready for a trial with God- sinners are guilty- but Job feels that he is innocent- I think Job wants to get on with a trial with God.

Don’t fake it - be real as Jesus is real and demonstrates leadership through redemption. Point to Jesus and remember the nourishing gift of grace. Accept it and minister for life.

God commands me to pray - he will listen- I must listen to him

John 14.1-14 - Believe! - Jesus comes to me- not I to him- believe and do Jesus works

Jonah 2 - From the death of the depths of the sea- to the life of puke chunks on a beach - God will bring me from death to life in many strange ways.

Psalm 124 - My help is in the name of God- only he can save me

Prayer- Lord- you give many different vision and dreams to all sorts of ordinary people- lead and guide your people this day - for in your people you work and dwell - in your people you speak - hear my praises this day - forgive my sins this day - lead me this day towards the prepared place you have for me- I will follow and believe - I will have trust, hop, and faith that you are God and will win all battles-- I’m ready - let’s go -- Amen

Focus on God

Focus on God

Ever think about God’s presence in the cloud with the Israelites? Sometimes I do. When I look at this picture, I think about that cloud. God’s presence in that cloud. I think about life. God’s presence in life. How sometimes God’s presence in my life can be up real close. Almost too close. So close that his presence is blurry to me. But I still feel and see the beauty of life in God’s presence with me. I feel and see the gentle color and shape he gives to me. I feel God. A little blurry; but I feel God. Then sometimes I see the beauty of God a little further away. I see some contrast with a backdrop of blue. How that life stands out in an endless blue sky of hope and joy in the life God gives to all people. That blue sky that goes on for eternity. Just like the love of God in Jesus goes on for eternity. Forever and ever- Amen. But then sometimes stuff gets in the way. I can’t clearly see the Cloud of God. Stuff is in the way blocking my view. I realize that I am sinful. I let stuff get in the way. I don’t have a clear view of God’s cloud. I can feel the life up close. I can see the yellow and green of Jesus presence in my life up close. But there is this stuff in the way and my view of the Cloud of God isn’t clear. I need that life up close. That presence and gift of life in Jesus. That forgiveness of my sin. That forgiveness of the stuff, the trees, that get in the way, that sin that gets in the way of a clear, vision of God. Jesus forgives my sin and even though it’s still there day after day, I can see the Cloud of God. God is distant in that cloud of life. That Cloud containing the life giving water of my Baptism. But his forgiveness and life is also present in the closeness of Jesus forgiveness and salvation in the life of the fresh flowers up close and in my face. Thanks be to God for his presence. Thanks be to God for his life. Up close, in my face, and distant too. I think I’ll keep my focus on God. Up close and at a distant. And someday those trees will bloom with the life of God and the life and love of God will consume me in his love.

Acts 9.26-43 - So Saul gets to Jerusalem- you can imagine you people are afraid of him and don’t trust his motives- Barnabas took Saul to the Apostles and explained how Saul had changed- his life changed once he met Jesus- all lives change once you meet Jesus- but Saul spoke what was on his mind and was always arguing with the Jews - then the Jews tried to kill him- so the followers found out and took Saul to Caesarea and on to Tarsus for protection -- then we jump to Peter - he is like Elijah and Elisha -- heal Aeneas and brings Dorcas back to life (how would you like to be a female named Doras?- wonder if your nick name would be Dork?) -- actually Dorcas means deer -- (now why do they tell you that?) - anyway - Peter raises her from the dead- pretty good- and it is all in the name of Jesus so a bunch of people began to believe!

Joshua 5.2-6.27 - Ayyyy!-- what a way to start - Make some flint knives and circumcise the men and boys! -- they hadn’t been circumcised for forty years in the desert -- they had better tools than this then- but this was some ritual thing -- sounds like using a butter knife to me!!- OUCH!!--and will you look at the name of the location! - Haaraloth Hill--or “Foreskin Hill“-- ayyyyhhh!- how would you like to take a vacation honey?- lets go visit Foreskin Hill, maybe they have a museum there. It‘s a really neat place - they have this big pile of foreskins to look at! - Whooopeee!- So these guys had to rest a while before going into battle- it’s not like they were still babies and couldn’t remember what happened! --for obvious reasons- it would be hard to run a charge in that condition! - so they camped at Gilgal- after a couple of weeks God stopped the manna- wouldn’t need it anymore- they are in the Land of Milk and Honey- and they celebrated Passover- just like the Passover was celebrated before leaving Egypt and crossing the Red Sea- Passover is celebrated again here before after leaving the desert, crossing the Jordan and entry to the Promised Land- this is a big deal! - this in an occasion of God- never forget this- God is about to fulfill a promise here- remember it!- then think about Jesus celebrating the Passover- then his death and resurrection - a big big big deal!-- mark it with Passover- remember it- celebrate it! - oh the significance of the bread and the wine- the body and the blood- another big deal from God- another act of salvation and love for his people- the Red Sea- the Jordan and the Promised Land- Communion and Jesus saving act! -- a huge deal! -don‘t forget how gracious and saving God is! - EVER!- Joshua sees a man standing near by one day- goes to find out who’s side he is on- neither- he says - I’m here as commander of the LORD’s army- Joshua fell to his knees- take off your sandals- “This is a holy place.”-- So Joshua took off his sandals- sounds like Moses encounter with the burning bush -but it’s like the rest of the story is left out- makes you wonder what else happened- then the battle for Jericho -- odd- you wonder if the people grumbled - what’s this dumb crap about - march around once a day for six days- then on the seventh day march around seven times- blow horns and yell! -- The wall will fall down and you can run in and take the city-- yea right! -- but it worked! -I need to have faith in God- I need to trust God and obey when he tells me to do something that sounds absurd-- look at the results- look at the faith and trust the Israelites now have -- God is pretty dern smart - I guess that’s why only he can be God and not me--ok so we save Rahab and her family-- really neat thought here- Rahab is one of Jesus ancestors- a prostitute! -- God loves us all that much!- and look how she was saved! -- rescued by God- a calling she didn’t even know about would develop into the Savior of the world- hide them spies Rahab! -- do the work of God!- so Rahab was one of the very few people saved in the city of Jericho- I appreciate how God has saved me- I don’t deserve it either- but I believe it!

Job 23 - Job wishes he could find God- complain to God and tell God that he is innocent so that God would set him free. And Job realizes that God alone is God and God will do as he pleases.

Don’t fake it - be real as Jesus is real and demonstrates leadership through redemption. Point to Jesus and remember the nourishing gift of grace. Accept it and minister for life.

At the last hour take me from the troubles of this world to God in heaven-- or as Luther said when he thought he was about to die-- “I am like a ripe stool, and the world is like a gigantic anus, and so we're about to let go of each other." -- and off to heaven I go - cause God will deliver me from evil!

1 Peter 2.2-10 - taste that pure spiritual milk- God is good - come to him, a living stone- reminds me of those stones the Israelites stacked up at the Jordan- Jesus is my living stone- let me be built in him- I must proclaim the mighty acts of him who called me out of darkness into his marvelous light!

Matthew 20.1-16 - I love the pay- I love to work all day in your Kingdom- that is my reward! - to work in your Kingdom - all day long and for the same pay as the ones who only worked an hour- I rejoice in their pay also and wish I could have worked with them all day too! - I love the pay- I love to work in your kingdom all day long-- Work?-- it’s easy! -- it’s more like play! -- Let’s play!- Come on! -- the day is coming to and end-- join in!- the pay is great! -- the play is even greater!

Psalm 49 - “I will solve my riddle to the music of the harp.” - sounds pretty neat!- I wanna play a game and listen to music!

Prayer- Jesus- it’s time to play - it’s time to run around the city telling about you - even if it makes some people mad- for when I met you - it all changed- just like Saul - it all changed- if I’m in danger you will protect me-- you prepare me for battle- you prepare me for your kingdom - sometimes in some real strange ways- and then you lead me- you throw a party first- we party first so I can remember how great you are- what a big deal you have made of me- then we go do some really strange things- I gotta trust you in all those strange games we play - and it all works out through you - you take care of it all- and use some of the weirdest people like me as your playmates- and the pay is great! - what more could I ask for? - it’s a Saturday - a day to go out to the park - to go out to your kingdom and play! - Let’s play! -- Amen

April 22nd Reflection

Friday 4/22/2005

Acts 9.1-25 - Saul’s calling by Jesus to change completely - turn around and do the opposite-turn back to God- it’s interesting how many people are involve-- it’s not just Jesus and Saul -- there are those with Saul on the road - there is Ananias-- God uses Saul’s calling to involve a whole bunch of people- and Jesus shows his life through all these people

Joshua 3.1-5.1 - They cross the Jordan - behind the chest- following God- “You’ve never been there before, and you won’t know the way, unless you follow the chest. But don’t get too close!” -- follow God- but don’t try to lead - always follow- have enough faith to boldly go into the river- a place the doesn’t make sense to walk into- God will take care of the issues for you - just have faith and follow- after they crossed- a member from each tribe carried a rock to that spot and set it up as a remembrance of what God had done-- Jesus is my rock - I will set a rock up in remembrance of the life he gave me- Worship only God - he is the only one who can save-only God can straighten out some of the messes I get into- only God can create the dry land I need to “get over it”-- or maybe “get through it” -in this case- only God saves- the barriers or obstacles that seem insurmountable in my eyes are nothing to God- look to God if the path looks crazy that he points me towards- have faith and “get through it”-- I think I’m changing.- yea “get through it” with the help and guidance of God - have faith and trust in God and let him allow me to “get through it”-- it might just be a whole bunch of fun! - “get through it”- and have a blast - there is a celebration in the end with a great rock of salvation!

Job 22 - Eliphaz again assumes Job is guilty- good advice to turn back to God- but his assumption about Job is way too judgmental - that is up to God not Eliphaz

Don’t fake it - be real as Jesus is real and demonstrates leadership through redemption. Point to Jesus and remember the nourishing gift of grace. Accept it and minister for life.

I as God to protect me from the devil, the world and my sinful self that I may not be led into sin

Acts 7.55-60 - Keep my eyes and life focused on the cross and Jesus - Jesus is life and salvation

Habakkuk 3.17-19 -God the Lord, is my strength- only life and salvation in Jesus

Psalm 92 - “the LORD is upright; he is my rock”

Prayer- Jesus you are my rock- my celebration - my joy - my salvation - my life- I will have faith, hope and trust in you as I “get through it” - as I cross my rivers this day - I know you will dry the path and lead me - I know you have taken care of it already- I know you are real - you are not a phony and that your path is THE path and will be my path this day- let the scales fall from my eyes so that I can see and hear your voice and understand the direction you wish for me to take today- let all who are involved with my calling this day head and see your power and glory and witness your saving grace- for you are life and salvation -bring healing and comfort to those close to me- and let all your children feel your healing from the inside out this day. -- Amen

April 21st Reflection

Thursday 4/21/2005

Acts 8.26-40- A angel gave Philip direction to head south- as he was Philip saw an official to the Queen of Ethiopia on his way home reading the book of Isaiah - The Spirit told Philip to catch the chariot- so Philip ran up close- Philip had to “run and tell”- he explained the passage in Isaiah- how it referred to Jesus- Philip took this man from where his understanding was and showed him the gospel of Jesus and the man was baptized. Run and tell- baptize- care and love for each other just as Jesus cares for me.

Joshua 1-2 - So Joshua is now in the lead- he is told to always think about the Law of God - day and night - God will help him wherever God leads him- Then the tribes of Rueben, Gad and East Manasseh agreed as promised to go into the Promised Land and help all the other tribes battle for their land-- these above tribes are the ones that will settle east of the Jordan as Moses and God agreed- so spied are sent into Jericho- they stay at the house of Rahab a prostitute-- I have to wonder what was on their minds?- why a prostitute- was it for obvious reasons or Spirit led?- anyway Rahab’s house is searched- she lies for the spies- and in gratitude the spies agree not to harm Rahab or her relatives when they return to defeat Jericho- Rahab becomes part of the chosen people after this and a link to God giving the Promised Land to the Israelites- God chooses and uses all sorts of people.

Job 21 - Some things don’t seem to make sense- the wicked live a good life- enjoy- reap the benefits of life and are happy and merry even though they don’t believe in God- but here is Job- a man who followed God- his family is gone and he is an awful sight- and in pain. Doesn’t make any sense or seem to have any justice to Job.

Don’t fake it - be real as Jesus is real and demonstrates leadership through redemption. Point to Jesus and remember the nourishing gift of grace. Accept it and minister for life.

Give me everything by grace as I forgive my neighbor

Psalm 31.1-5, 15-16 - I look to God alone to save me

Ephesians 1.3-14 - God chose me before the foundation of the world- In Jesus I am saved- I live for the praise of God’s glory-I have been marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit

Psalm 41 - God is good, gracious and blesses

Prayer- Lord you lead me to run and tell- to run and tell your people at whatever place they may be - at whatever understanding they have of you I am to run and tell- you lead me to cross the Jordan - to have faith in people I would never expect to have faith in - for you work through just plain people in very powerful ways- you work through us to save us in faith and hope and joy for what you already set before us- jesus saving grace - the gift right there - dead center in front of my face- take it - use it- and joyously praise you and serve you in your kingdom - I’m ready - lead and guide me this day. -- Amen

April 20th Reflection

Wednesday 4/20/2005

Acts 8.1b-25 - Philip goes to Samaria- the Gospel of Jesus is spreading- Simon the magician is converted to Christianity- this is no small thing since Simon had a following- but Simon began to think that you could buy the healing power of the Spirit- he had to ask for forgiveness when he was reprimanded for such a thought- was his repentance real? - or was it like Pharaoh’s?- God has this answer- I think it was sincere

Deuteronomy 33-34 - Moses blesses the tribes of Israel from the mountain as he gazes at the Promised Land- Moses was a faithful servant - followed his call- he saw God even in the hiding places- saw God’s Spirit in the chariots of the sky come to save his people- Moses was still strong of body and good sight- still blessed by God until the end- but he would not actually get to move into the Promised Land- he had served his call- Moses was going to the Promised Land that God really intended for him and for all of us -- not necessarily some physical place - but a place face to face with God- in communion with God - a wonderful place.

Job 20 - Seems like Job’s friends are leaving God off to the side of the conversation- yea God is in it - but they leave him off to the side - like each one of them has the answer to why Job is in the position he is in- but really -only God has the true answer- trust and rely on God- he IS the answer.

Don’t fake it - be real as Jesus is real and demonstrates leadership through redemption. Point to Jesus and remember the nourishing gift of grace. Accept it and minister for life.

God provides for everyone- may I realize his provisions given to me and give thanks and praise to God

Colossians 1.24-2.7 - I am a servant to make the Word of God known- with whatever God gives me I will make the mystery known of Jesus saving grace in the way God chooses for me to reveal it - as Christians we need to unite our hearts in love - the love of Christ - live life in Christ

John 8.31-36 - Continue in Jesus word- let Jesus make me free

Psalm 36 - “you save humans and animals alike, O LORD.” -- interesting thought - God forgives my sin and saves me

Prayer- Lord Jesus - you grant the mystery of your saving grace to all people- you even save animals- that’s and interesting thought -- forgive my sins and send me into the world to proclaim yours story- fill me with the Spirit to speak your word of healing to those you place before me this day- your healing- let me never place you to the side this day - but let me always be aware that you are the center of my life- you are the healing in my life- you are the life in me- real and present now- for in your life and healing I am free and saved. Thanks be to God! -- Amen

April 19th Reflection

Tuesday 4/19/2005

Acts 7.23-8.1a - Stephen tells of Moses’ calling- of the Israelites unfaithfulness to God- then of the tabernacle and temple- he reaffirms how stubborn the chosen people are to the Spirit of God- how they always turned away from God and killed the prophets God sent and how even today we kill the one God sent to save us-- well this did it with the Jewish leaders- they got so mad that they drug Stephan outside and stoned him -- all at the foot of Saul - later to become Paul- Stephan died innocent and dedicated to God.

Deuteronomy 31-32 - So God tells Moses this is it-- get Joshua in front of the people- Joshua will lead the Israelites into the Promised Land- Moses tells the people how important it is to follow the law and not turn from God- so important they are to read all the law every seven years- the year of Jubilee-- the law is to stay by the sacred chest- then God leads Moses to Mount Nebo -- lets Moses see the Promised Land- Moses leaves a song to the people - a song of how things will be if they are unfaithful to God- a testimony to the people- Moses loves these people so much he wants them to be successful and follow God- but he knows they will stumble and turn--but God has and will always remain faithful to his people- trying over and over again to get them to turn to him and keep him as their one and only god- but the Promised Land is seen -- oh how Moses must have longed for this land- but God brought him safely through the desert - and into God’s Promised Land.

Job 19 - Job is mad at his friends- he blames God for all that has happened to him- but in the end he still has faith that God will rescue him and he will see god- I know that my Savior lives -- what a testimony!--but the word for Savior is hard to interpret - it could mean avenger- the one who avenges the blood of a murdered relative- would this mean that Job feels God is killing him?- and a relative would take revenge on God?- could it mean that death is the enemy and God will send an avenger for this murder?-- I want to think that Jesus is that avenger for the murder I truly deserved- and he took on that death I deserved - turns it all around and becomes both the one who took my punishment and the avenger of my own murder that I justly deserved -- it’s up to you to decide

Don’t fake it - be real as Jesus is real and demonstrates leadership through redemption. Point to Jesus and remember the nourishing gift of grace. Accept it and minister for life.

You will is done when you strengthen my faith and keep me firm in your Word as long a I live.

Colossians 1.15-23 - In Jesus all things in heaven and on earth were created- Jesus is life! - Through his death - Jesus gave me life- I must have faith in Jesus

Ephesians 2.1-10 - I was dead in my sin- but God loved me so much he made me alive in Christ- by grace I have been saved- not something I did - but it’s all about what God did in Jesus- God created me for good in Christ Jesus way long ago!

Psalm 13 - Rejoice in Jesus salvation- sing to God - he is great!

Prayer- Lord you are God- you bring healing and life- you brought true life to Stephan - he could see your standing at the throne- standing - not sitting - you wich for action in your name- you which for me to take a stand in your name- to have faith - to trust- to love and to praise and honor you- this I will gladly do- you give me chance after chance through your loving care- forgive me and lead me this day in your kingdom - I know you live for you have brought me from death to life- you have brought me out of the desert into your light - all through the free gift of grace -- thank you -- send me now I pray on the way you would have me travel this day --- Amen

April 18th Reflection

Monday 4/18/2005

Acts 7.1-22 - Stephen testifies about faith - he tells God’s story - the story of the OT- I love how he does it too-- just tells it like a story - doesn’t get all preachy or sites scripture- just makes it all into a story of God and his people. He gets up to Moses so far.

Deuteronomy 29-30 - All this about law-blessings- curses- comes down to a choic “you can choose life and success or death and disaster.” -- All that God wishes for us we know in our heart. All we have to do is choose and obey. The people are about to cross the Jordan River and take the promised land- Obey God and live -- He has set it all right there in front of me -- made it a gift- a real simple choice- take the gift of Jesus loving grace and forgiveness- let his love burn within my heart.-- I choose life!- I will be faithful to God and love him and serve him. God is the only one who can give life.

Job 18 - I think Job’s friends are rotten- what an ass Bildad is!

Don’t fake it - be real as Jesus is real and demonstrates leadership through redemption. Point to Jesus and remember the nourishing gift of grace. Accept it and minister for life.

Send your Spirit so that by your grace I may believe your Word and live it now and forever.

Colossians 1.1-14 - have faith for there is hope laid up for me in heaven- be a minister of Chirst- be filled with the knowledge of God’s will- lead a life worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing him- bear fruit- be strong until Jesus comes with his glorious power- I have been transferred into the kingdom of light and Jesus kingdom- where I have forgiveness of sins.

Acts 20.17-35 - Be strong and keep up the ministry of Christ

Psalm 146 - praise God!

Prayer - Lord- you give some awesome stories to tell- give me the memory, the voice and the opportunities to tell your story- to tell the story of a love so deep that you gave us a choice- you allow us to choose life or death - you do all the hard stuff- you give life as a gift- you give a gift of life- by suffering and dying for my sins- you give life- and give my a graceful choice to make-- I choose life in you - I will serve, love and obey you forever. -- Amen

Re: Steam-Road

Bill,
What beautiful insight and message, you should be a writer.  If you wouldn't mind I would like to take the stream with you.

April 2005

I see two ways I can take. The way on the right is an easy paved but winding road. A real easy way to travel. Simple without much adventure or danger. The second way to take is down the stream. A rough way to go. Around rocks, through rough water. Much more scenic. Much more challenging. There will be some pain on this path for sure. There will be some exciting times too. There will be come peaceful times while I linger in the calm waters. In the heat of summer the water will be refreshingly cool. In the cold of winter the water will be painfully cold. During spring I will be entertained with new growth. I will be entertained with new life. I will be showered with the rain drops of God’s love for his creation. I will hear the beautiful fresh singing of birds excited to be back home. During the fall, I will be showered with the beauty of leaves fallen of many colors. Lives wonderfully lived in glory to God. The road on the right; much stays the same. Cars will sweep away the fallen leaves. Cars will muddy up the fallen rain. Cars will tragically slip in the fallen snow and ice. The stream on the left is ever changing. Fresh water is always flowing and moving and churning and playing the peaceful sound of flowing water on rocks. Even though the stream looks like the more difficult path to take; I am drawn to the stream rather than the road. I see the waters of Baptism in the stream. I see the passion of life in the stream. I see the creation of God in the stream. I see the Jordan. I see the Red Sea. I see the flood. I see the solid Rock of Christ. I see the early church in the churning water. I see my life in the churning water. I see struggle. I see pain. I see life. I see love. I see death in this stream along with passion and life. I think I’ll take that stream as my way. The way to that ever-flowing, everlasting water of life in the saving grace and love of Jesus Christ. I’m taking the stream. Which way will you take?

April 17th Reflection

Sunday 4/17/2005

Acts 6 - So there was work to do in taking care of the community that was taking from prayer and preaching time- they appointed seven people to take care of this work to free up time for the others- then Stephen is arrested - he was filled with the Spirit working miracles amongst the people-- a threat again to the Jewish leaders. Someone is always trying to stop God’s work - but it never works!

Deuteronomy 28 - Agreements- Covenants- Blessings and Curses- Stick with God- don’t ever turn from him- he loves me - but if I turn away - look out- he will try to get me back using every angle available- Stick with God- worship only him!

Job 17 - Job is so strong- he is dying and looks to God for hope

Let Jesus open the Word to my mind and his broken bread into my life - then “beat feet” to run and tell the world about his saving grace.

Teach the Word and live in harmony with it - keep God’s name holy

John 10.1-10 - It’s all about Jesus- he is the one who saved all of us-he paid the price in his suffering and death for my sin- it’s all about Jesus- he is the one who saved all of us- only God- no other way!

1 Corinthians 15.20-28 - I am made alive in Christ- It’s all about Jesus- he is the one who saved all of us

Psalm 14 - God is my refuge- only God- no other way!

Prayer- It’s all about you Lord- it’s about what you have done- thank you for your suffering - thank you for your death - thank you for forgiving me- thank you for the Spirit- thank you for breathing life inside of me- thank you for letting me serve and give your gifts back to your world- thank you for the opportunity- thank you for the joy- thank you for the pain- thank you for the healing - thank you for working through others- thank you Lord-- you are life- you are love- you are joy and bring that eternal joy to my heart-- Thank you Lord! -- Amen

April 16th Reflection

Saturday 4/16/2005

Acts 5.17-42 - So the high priest and Sadducees had the apostles arrested and thrown in jail. While in jail an angel came at night and released the apostles-- the next day they were back in the temple preaching and teaching the people about Jesus-- The Jewish leaders called for the guard to bring the apostles out of jail so they could talk to them- but they were gone- the jail was locked and guarded-- then the leaders heard that the apostles were in the temple preaching- the guards brought the apostles in-- the Jewish leaders were so mad they wanted to kill the apostles- but Gamaliel spoke up and said if this is not from God it will fail - so let them go - it will either fail - or it is from God- and if it is from God- the leaders don’t want to be fighting God-- so the apostles were whipped and beaten and released-- the apostles were happy to be beaten for Jesus sake- They never stopped telling the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Deuteronomy 25-27 - You keep reading all these laws - guidance and so forth -- and I come to a realization that there is a whole bunch of love being shown here- God wants his people to be safe in so many different ways- yea - some of the laws seem to be specific to the culture- but God does care about his children- even in the culture they live in-- and then I’m sure he wants some assurance that his “kids” will even try - so he asks them to make a promise - like pinky swear- they will try to keep his commandments-- and if they do God- like a Dad will give them gifts - be nice to them and show them love-- so - even in all these sometimes weird laws- I can see God’s love brightly shining through.

Job 16 - Job tells his friends that if he were in their place he would offer hope and comfort instead of the advice they are giving-- something to think about when dealing with the sick- Job feels God has done this to him-but he still looks to God for rescue.

Let Jesus open the Word to my mind and his broken bread into my life - then “beat feet” to run and tell the world about his saving grace.

Pray to God with complete confidence as children speak to their Daddy

1 Peter 2.19-25 - By his wounds you have been healed-- Jesus has healed me for good- once and for all- that really good healing that lasts forever!

Acts 4.1-12 - An example of Jesus everlasting healing was given through the healed crippled man that Jesus healed through the words and touch of Peter and John-- this man stands before the Jewish Leaders as an example and a wonderful opportunity for Peter and John to proclaim the saving grace of Jesus our risen Messiah.

Psalm 29 - The voice of the LORD-- a wonderful thing!

Prayer- Lord Jesus- you have released m from prison - from the prison of my sin and this earthly body - from the prison of guilt and deception - you have released me to proudly and boldly proclaim to the world that you are the Messiah- the chosen one of God - the one who died for all - the one who has saved us all - we are all saved- will we accept this salvation or throw it down and walk away? -- Guide me this day and love me like God loved the Israelites in the desert - show me the direction I need to take- discipline me with the rules I need to follow and give me your words to say. -- Continue to heal all of us and bring us closer to you. --- Amen

April 15th Reflection

Friday 4/15/2005

Acts 5.1-16 - A couple tried to lie to the church - they sold some property and gave to the church but made it look like they gave all to the church but actually held back some for themselves-- Ohh -- how many times do I do this with myself- don’t give it all to the church- especially in my work or dedication -- I need to remember that when I work for God- give it all up - do the best I can - he will accept nothing but my best and I should be way more than willing to offer my best and then let it go- don’t try to hold back- don’t try to be a little conservative and hold back a little for me- just in case- what kind of trust is that? -- if I don’t hold back - then I won’t have to worry either when it’s just not quite good enough- God accepts all I have to offer and works through normal people- doesn’t expect perfection cause he already gave us that- just wants my imperfect all- I think He delights in that.

Deuteronomy 23-24 - Ahhhh! -- what a way to start! - If a man’s private parts have been crushed or cut off, he cannot fully belong to the LORD’s people????--Who was thinking of that anyway! -- Why would you think of that?!---take a shovel with you and poop outside the camp-bury it-- boy what great advice-- I’d hate to step in that inside the camp somewhere!- (I wish the dogs would take that advice!) - (Hmm!-If I were a fish -what would I do then?)

Job 15 - So Eliphaz says to Job- don’t think you’re so smart- listen to what I know about wisdom- it seems funny the Eliphaz scolds Job then goes on to act like he is so smart too!

Let Jesus open the Word to my mind and his broken bread into my life - then “beat feet” to run and tell the world about his saving grace.

God gives me daily bread- forgives my sin -and I forgive others

Acts 2.42-47 - they shared everything - broke bread together and took care of each other while praising God

Lamentations 3.21-26 - God is good to those who wait for him- to the soul that seeks him- It is good that I should wait quietly for the salvation of God

Psalm 85 - God is good and gives salvation

Prayer- today Jesus - I come to you with my all - use all I have this day - use me - forgive me- lead me- direct me- even in those ways I don’t understand- I place my hope and trust in you - for you have all wisdom - you have all power and healing comes through you - you give gifts and bring them inside of me to heal me - to comfort me- to provide for me- then I respond with you love - from the inside out- I hear - I am beginning to understand - and I will wait quietly and patiently for you. -- Amen

April 13th Reflection

Wednesday 4/13/2005

Acts 4.1-22 - So Peter and John are now in trouble with the Jewish leaders- the same ones who put Jesus on the cross- so they have to go before the Jewish Leaders - Peter gives a great speech in defense of their action- since the crippled man was healed there had been about five thousand new Christians now --who believed in the resurrection of the dead- this is one of those point that the Sadducees and Pharisees would argue about -- Peter tells this group -- “Only Jesus has the power to save!” -- Well the officials look at Peter and John and know they are only ordinary men and not well educated-- they don’t know what to do with them- so they tell them to stop talking about Jesus- but Peter and John answer - “We cannot keep quiet about what we have seen and heard.” - Neither can I. - Time to “beat feet” and run and tell.

Deuteronomy 19-20 - Two things come to mind- the idea of Safe Towns - where a person who accidentally killed someone else could run and be safe- the relatives of the person killed were to seek revenge for the death and kill the murderer-- but what if it was an accident and the relative didn’t know this?- that is where the safe town comes in -- do I need to run to a Safe town for the crucifixion of Jesus? - well that wasn’t an accident- so I would still be found guilty even if I ran to the Safe town- but God pardons me anyway! -- the second thing here is how the Israelites were to have faith in God during battle- it was God who actually gives the victory- especially when the odds are stacked against me in battle- I must have faith and trust that God will defend me and go on into the battle- then give God the glory and praise after victory - kinda sounds like life- trust God and go on into the battle with him having faith.

Job 13 - Job finally tells his friends that they are full of it! -- Job wants God to respond to his question of why all this has happened to him.-- Job asks God -”Do you really enjoy frightening a fallen leaf?”

Let Jesus open the Word to my mind and his broken bread into my life - then “beat feet” to run and tell the world about his saving grace.

I believe that I cannot by my own understanding or effort believe in Jesus -or come to him- but the Spirit calls be the Word- gives me gifts and keeps me in true faith- and day after day my sins are forgiven because of this one true faith in Jesus -- yea I need to repent - but day after day God comes to me- I can’t come to him-because God has already come to me--Thanks be to God!

1 John 5.1-12 - Jesus came with the water and the blood- Those who believe in Jesus have the testimony of the Spirit and of Jesus in their hearts- the testimony is this--God gave us eternal life through and in Jesus

Luke 18.1-8- pray-pray-pray- ask again and again and again- be persistent - God listens but you really gotta have faith - so it’s ok to keep going back

Psalm 45 - You are King- “your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia”- reminds me of Jesus anointing with perfume- praise God forever and ever

Prayer-Jesus- you are the one I proclaim - I must like Peter and John tell what I have seen- how can I help it? - as I run to the safe town for my sins and for killing you - please forgive me- I realize that day after day you forgive me- you pardon me for the sins I commit- you take up my defense and take on my sin - I will respond with joy and thanksgiving and turn from that sin and “beat feet” to run and tell of your saving grace - you are God- you are that wonderful King that comes to me in all your glory-- send me as your servant into your kingdom - lead and guide me on the way - put your word into my mouth and use me this day. -- Amen

April 12th Reflection

Tuesday 4/12/2005

Acts 3 - Peter and John see a man who can’t walk - that begs by the place of prayer every day at 3pm and don’t have money to give to him but do heal this man in the name of Jesus- this man had faith in Jesus- the crowd that observed this gathered and Peter and John had an instant opportunity to witness to Jesus saving grace. Turn to God! - your sins will be forgiven and he will send you strength- God will send you Jesus to bless you and make you turn from your sins.

Deuteronomy 17-18 - It’s interesting how God cares for his children- the wisdom to see how they will act in their future- what troubles they may have- like judging difficult cases - of theft or murder- what to do in those cases- they will ask for a king- have the king appointed by God- how the king will be tempted by foreign wives to worship other gods- false prophets- how his children will turn from him and seek weird stuff like looking into the future or looking at livers of dead animals to tell what the future holds-- but all this comes to the point that I must trust in God- God will take care of my future for me- I can’t pretend to be so high and mighty that I think I can control my future- turn to God and trust God with my care and future- this will allow me to gladly serve, love, trust and obey him.

Job 12 - It’s easy to condemn those who are suffering when you have no troubles-- Job lays it out to his so called friends- I wonder about how loyal of friends they are- Every living creature is in the hands of God- God is the source of wisdom and strength-so it sounds like Job is still wondering why me?- what did I do?

Let Jesus open the Word to my mind and his broken bread into my life - then “beat feet” to run and tell the world about his saving grace.

I believe that Jesus Christ- true God, Son of the Father from eternity, and true man, born of the Virgin Mary-is my Lord.---At great cost he has saved me that I may be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness.

1 John 4.7-21 - God is love- God’s love was revealed to us through and in Jesus- God’s love in Jesus so that we might live through Jesus- since God loves us so much we ought to love one another- We love because he first loved us

Hebrews 12.1-11 - run the race set before me- looking to Jesus- don’t grow weary or lose heart - keep focus on Jesus as I run- in struggle with sin- keep focus on Jesus as I run- endure trials- keep focus on Jesus as I run-in discipline- keep focus on Jesus as I run- Jesus has already won the race for me- keep focus on Jesus as I run-the victory has already been won- run with joy and thanksgiving and passion and laughter as I keep focus on Jesus as I run

Psalm 117 - the faithfulness of God is forever

Prayer-Jesus- through faith in you the lame man at the gate was able to get up and run - to run and keep his focus on you - through faith in you the Israelites were able to cross the Jordan and to live the lives you gave to them as they focus on a great King to come in you- yea I may stumble and fall - but I turn to you - focus on you and ask you to forgive my sins- to restore me - to pick me up- and you let me leap for joy - and run and tell - you let me beet feet back to the world you put me in - the world you lead me to - to tell of your wonderful story of grace and love and forgiveness- even in trouble and suffering- you let me focus on you and see your creation and the love you have in store- here and now - lead me this day- work your will through me- give me the words to say and the actions to take. -- Amen

April 7th Reflection

Thursday 4/7/2005

Matthew 27.32-66 - Jesus is led to his crucifixion- Such a familiar story - yet always new - Simon of Cyrene forced to carry Jesus’ cross -- what an honor- did it feel like an honor? - probably not-- two criminals on Jesus’ left and right- what an honor - did it feel like an honor?- probably not - then all the mocking - “He trusted God, so let God save him, if he wants to.”--Little do they know the miracle right in front of their own eyes-what an honor to see- did it feel like an honor? - probably not - At noon it turned dark and stayed that way until 3pm- nature even mourns - what an honor-did it feel like an honor?- probably not - Jesus shouts - “Why have you forsaken me?” -- what an honor to hear Jesus last words- did it feel like an honor? - probably not - Then to see the curtain of the temple tear from top to bottom- the earth shake- rocks split and people raised to life from their graves - what an honor- did it feel like an honor?- probably not - These grave people later -after Jesus resurrection came out of their graves and into Jerusalem to be seen- what an honor- did it feel like an honor- probably so! - The officer was frightened and proclaimed the “This man really was God’s Son!” - what an honor- did it feel like an honor- probably so! - Joseph of Arimathea came to get the body of Jesus for a proper burial - what an honor - did it feel like and honor? - probably so! - Mary Magdalene and Mary carefully guarded the tomb - what an honor - did it feel like an honor?-probably so! - But Pilate sent Soldiers to guard the tomb - what an honor- did it feel like an honor?- probably so! -- You see at first my won selfishness - my own sinfulness took my eye off of God and centered my life around me- I see many things but in the light of my own eyes- I can’t see the light of God when I’m like this - things that should feel like an honor become hallow- there is no honor in myself- but as things change - as I see the death of Jesus - as I realize the impact of what God did- as I realize the love God has shown - things that happen - I begin to see through the eyes of Jesus- I see his humble servant hood and love and I see the honor - it is an honor to be loved by Jesus - it is an honor to give my life to him- it is an honor to be a part of his ministry - it is an honor and a joy to be brought from death to life.

Deuteronomy 7-8 - When you go into the land- trust in God- he will defeat the enemies- destroy the evil in the land- the idol worship - don’t be concerned with gaining wealth - god takes care of you - he will feed you- just like he fed the manna- God taught a lesson - people need more than food to live - I need every Word that God has spoken - God corrects me- so obey his commands - worship God and love him- God has a good land prepared for you - praise God and never forget him

Job 7 - Why does God even care about me- why all the pain- why all the sorrow -does God even care?- in the grand scheme of time- I’m a nothing - less than a second - here -then gone- so who cares?

Look, listen, touch, taste- Jesus resurrection is in the center of the tomb of my heart. I now have life in death. The door will not hold the Giver of life back.

Encourage my neighbors family and friends to remain loyal.

Psalm 116.1-4, 12-19 - Lift up the cup of salvation and call on God! - Pay vows to God- I am God’s servant!

Hebrews 9.24-28 - Jesus died once- for all sin- the sacrificing is done- don’t need to do it over and over-- and Jesus will come again to save me as I eagerly wait.

Psalm 93 - God is lifted up- lifted up on that cross of glory-power and saving grace - Jesus is lifted up! - Thanks be to God!

Quote from Portals of Prayer - Thursday, April 7 --”Jesus took our place as our substitute. On the cross He died for us to make up for our failures, to pay the penalty for our sins, and to bring us from death to life.”

Prayer- Lord- You died - but you also gave life - you bring honor - and honor only through you - no wonder Job had trouble when he was ill and in pain - wouldn’t we all - help me - Job and all others be able to see how precious we are in your sight - you love us so much that you gave your very life for us - to save us from our own sin- that’s the answer- now I give the life you gave me back to you - use me this day in your kingdom- use me to love the people you surround me with this day - use my mouth to proclaim your story - to sing your praises -- may I be a delight - may I be your desire this day. -- Amen

April 3rd Reflection

Sunday 4/3/2005

Matthew 26.1-25 -Jesus tells the disciples once again what is going to happen to him in Jerusalem- then he is eating with Simon the leper and a woman anoints Jesus with perfume for burial - A couple things come to mind here for me- Jesus ministers to those that would normally be unclean and no one would reach - then he honors the woman for doing a good thing which to many would seem wasteful- But she is giving her best - I think maybe God wants my best too-and Jesus tells us that wherever the good news is told all over the world people will remember what this woman has done- she anointed the Messiah - anointed his body in death and Jesus gave the world life through death- The Passover meal begins and Judas set out to betray Jesus - so here it starts.

Numbers 35-36 - God sets up cities for the Levites and cities for people who may have accidentally killed someone else to run to - these “Safe” cities were there to protect the innocent until a fair trial could be given. Then finally again the issue of the Zelophehad daughters - they could marry within their clan so that land given to them would not go outside of their father’s inheritance. God brings to conclusion the second Israelite nation - everything is now prepared for entry into the Promised Land - Trust in God’s good provision and blessings.

Job 3 - Job now is feeling pretty bad about himself- but he doesn’t blame God - he wonders about why he was even born and why he has to feel this pain - he is a very strong man!

Jesus collapsed the box and prison of death and sin for me and the world. I will run and tell the world of this awesome freeing love.

Love and respect each other

John 20.19-31 - The doors were shut but Jesus came in anyway - are the doors of my heart shut? - even when they are - Jesus comes in anyway - he is there -- but then think of last Sunday - the tomb was closed and when the angel rolled the stone away - the tomb was empty -- he was NOT there -- Jesus is not ruled by the tomb of death- but he does give me a heart of life -- he is not longer in the tomb of death - now he lives and gives me and everyone else a heart of life - Thanks be to God!

John 4.5-26 - That water of life - flowing freely from Jesus - that water that will go on forever- that water from my Savior - I want that water!

Psalm 9.11-20 - God never forgets the needy or the poor.

Prayer - Jesus- thank you for the suffering you endured for me- thank you for the pain you gave for me - you didn’t have a city of refuge to run to - but you came to Jerusalem and endured my pain - my conviction- my crime -- then after death you surprised all of us- you were not in the tomb - you surprised all of us - you came to us through locked doors - you surprised all of us and gave us life out of death - now I can live in joy and thanksgiving for all you have done for me -forgive me this day I pray - for the times I have failed you - but thank you for the joy you have given me to surprise those you give to me - to run and tell in joy and thanksgiving how wonderful you are - how beautiful you are - how gracious you are - how powerful you are - how tender and caring and innocent your are - run with joy and thanksgiving for all you have done -- Thank you Jesus! -- Amen
