December 4th - Reflection

Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19 (NRSV)
The righteous shall flourish

Give the king your justice, O God,
and your righteousness to a king's son.
May he judge your people with righteousness,
and your poor with justice.
May the mountains yield prosperity for the people,
and the hills, in righteousness.
May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the needy,
and crush the oppressor.

May he live while the sun endures,
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.
May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,
like showers that water the earth.
In his days may righteousness flourish
and peace abound, until the moon is no more. ...

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.
Blessed be his glorious name forever;
may his glory fill the whole earth.
Amen and Amen.

Reflection
As I think about Christ the King and this psalm; I can't help but ponder the everlasting nature of God. I think about how God has existed even longer than the sun and moon. I ponder how God has blessed the lives of generations with the waters of living life. And I pause to think about the life of Jesus and his love for the poor and oppressed.

Jesus came into this world poor. He came in as a poor king. He lived in this world knowing of his Father's love for his people and living out that love for all God's children. Jesus gave his very life for all. Jesus became the King Eternal.

This psalm grants a vision through King David to the eternal nature of Christ the King. A vision of the Redeemer of the poor, oppressed, the ill and the fallen, bring healing to all creation. A vision of our Savior and his glory that fills all the earth.

As I think about Christ the King and this psalm; I can't help but ponder the everlasting nature of God.

Prayer
Lord, you are everlasting. You bless all generations and cause us to see your glory and power. Fill your children's hearts with that same love and compassion that Jesus exhibits and move us to love one another...today...tomorrow and forever. --- Amen
