January 4th - Reflection

Exodus 3:1-5 (NRSV)
The burning bush

Moses was keeping the flock of his father in law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, "I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up." When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." Then he said, "Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."

Reflection
It seems to me that even when we stumble into the wilderness by chance or maybe on purpose as Moses had done leading his flock, that this is the very time that God makes himself known to us. In the wilderness of the issues of life or even when we are lost, God comes to us. God comes and shows the miracle of his Light.

Moses saw the Light of the fire of a burning bush in the wilderness. We see the Light of Christ in the midst of pain and suffering or want. Jesus is closer than you think. We struggle and wrestle with many issues. Sometimes the Light leads us in unique ways that only God has planned. We must be faithful and trust in that Light and follow that Light. And respect the place and time that God appears. This place and moment just may be holy ground. Thanks be to God!

Prayer
Lord, when I'm troubled and can't seem to find my way. When I just seem to stumble into the wilderness...show your Light that I may come to my senses and follow that Light. For you alone are the Way the Truth and the Light. --- Amen
