December 31st People Reflection

Saturday 12/31/2005

Luke 5.1-26-But Jesus would often go to some place where he could be alone and pray.

Ezekiel 48-An area in the center of this land will belong to me…The new name of the city will be "The-LORD-Is-Here!"

Isaiah 66-The people I treasure most are the humble

Galatians 4.4-7-So you no longer are a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

Exodus 3.13-15-I AM has sent me to you.

Psalm 135-Praise the name of the LORD

"There is some mock turtle soup over here now."- Mom makes mock turtle soup this time every year. I usually help in some way. Even once made it myself. Something about bringing in the New Year. I don’t know anything different. It’s just what you’re supposed to do. And you don’t get it any other time of year. People either love the stuff or hate it. I think they hate it because it looks like puke. It’s one of those special things done. I think Jesus time off to himself in a special place was always one of those special times. Time with God in prayer. All people need to go to God in prayer. Do it alone. We all need that. Need to be alone with God. In a special place. At a special time. Sure you can pray in public too and we need to do that also but we must go to God alone in prayer. That’s how we are in relationship with God. It’s a time that we can be completely humble. A time to share it all with God. It’s ok- God is our father. He knows how to listen. He knows how to love and we are his child after all. And God frees us from that slave of sin in our lives. He frees us because we are his children and he loves us. God is I AM—God is real and loves us so much he would go to hell for us- he would take on pain for us and with us- he would save us from sin, death, the devil and ourselves----and he DID! –As we humble ourselves before God in that special place he frees us and we respond in joy and thanksgiving as servants of the great I AM and we praise that name before all the world he has blessed us with. "There is some mock turtle soup over here now."- A special time, a special food—but certainly a real God!

Prayer-Lord, thank you for being special to me and thank you for making me special to you. -- Amen

December 30th People Reflections

Friday 12/30/2005

Luke 4.31-44-He put his hands on each one of them and healed them.

Ezekiel 46-47-Wherever this water flows, there will be all kinds of animals and fish, because it will bring life and fresh water to the Dead Sea.

Isaiah 65-I will answer their prayers before they finish praying.

Isaiah 61.10-62.3-for he has clothed me with garments of salvation…and you shall be called by a new name…you shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD

Luke 13.31-35-Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way…

Psalm 138-For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly

"Didn’t you see me walk by?"- Sue passed by as I was waiting on a bench at Walmart. Seems like I’m always on a bench somewhere lately. No, I didn’t see her pass by. Maybe I was looking at the lights in the store, at the sprinklers and stuff. Looking up at the ceiling. Some silly thing I do because of my job. What’s this to do with anything. I wonder sometimes if in life I get so wrapped up with it that I ignore Jesus- I ignore God and he walks right by and I don’t even know it – cause I’m looking up in the ceiling at the sprinkler lines or some silly thing like that? I’m sure I do that sometimes. I’m sure I need forgiveness for those times. Then I think about how Jesus healed people. He put his hands on each one of them. I like how his touch enters their lives and heals them. Whenever I have felt Jesus healing- I have felt that touch. You know it is there. You don’t miss it like a walk by because you feel his touch. Like the water of baptism—the baby feels the water- maybe cries- but they feel the touch- an adult feels the wet – or maybe it’s immersion- they stop breathing for a moment- come out of that water- exhale that old life and breath in a new life in God- water that flows through the temple of the body of Christ- water that brings fresh life to a dead sea- Jesus touch- the feel of the garments of salvation- the sound of a new name- the vision of a crown of beauty- a new life- today changed- tomorrow served- the future fulfilled- Jesus doesn’t just walk by – he stops and touches my life- he answers my prayers even before I’m done with them- Jesus doesn’t walk by all high and mighty- he stops to touch the lowly and save each one of us – with a touch of love. "Didn’t you see me walk my?" Yea- I saw you- after your loving touch! – Thanks be to God!

Prayer- Lord, thank you for your touch of love in my life- may you touch others through me this day with your love. -- Amen

Thursday 12/29/2005

Luke 4.1-30They dragged him to the edge of the cliff on which the town was built, because they wanted to throw him down form there.

Ezekiel 44-45-I saw the brightness of the LORD’s glory had filled the temple

Isaiah 64-Rip the heavens apart! Come down, LORD

Psalm 148-Praise the LORD!

1 Peter 2.21-25-He himself bore our sins in his body n the cross

Psalm 51-The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit

"Don’t get excited. We’re not done yet."- Sarah as I’m waiting on a bench at the Dayton Mall- yea- I’m not done yet- I can get excited but not about my doings- it’s about God’s doings- it’s about his brightness and glory that fills this earth- I must repent- I must realize I was born into sin- I must realize that time after time I drag Jesus to the edge of the cliff- in my town and threaten to toss him over- I am sinful and I need Jesus to rip the heavens apart and come down- come down to save me from sin and myself- and he did- Jesus bore my sins in the pains and suffering of his body on the cross- and in this all I have to offer- is repentance and a broken spirit- for God saves- and in this I can get excited and Praise God! – "Don’t get excited. We’re not done yet." – I know- but you give me so much to get excited about.

Prayer- Lord, forgive me and continue to work on me- and Thanks be to God for your saving and forgiving grace. -- Amen

December 28th People Reflection

Wednesday 12/28/2005

Luke 3.21-38-The family of Jesus went all the way back to Adam and then to God.

Ezekiel 42-43-I saw the brightness of the glory of Israel’s God coming from the east.

Isaiah 63-It’s me, the LORD! I have won the battle, and I can save you!

Matthew 2.1-8, 13-18-Get up…..

Psalm 90-Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

"Are you down there going through your ritual?"- Sarah calling down the basement – where I read and reflect – pray and study—Never thought of it as a ritual though- I have thought of it as Psalm 90 states- a time in the morning that God show his love to me- makes me glad and sends me out for the day- I have found it a time to reconnect with God’s family – from Jesus to Adam to God (not sure about all those names in between there though!)- I have thought about it as a time to see the light of the sun in the east from a different perspective- the light of God shining into my life- certainly at 4am I have failed to see the light of the sun- maybe a trip to Alaska is due for that some day- I have thought of it as a time to give thanks for the battles that God has won for me- to understand that he alone saves me- and finally I have thought of it as a time to Get up… - to go into Egypt or Cincinnati too. "Are you down there going through your ritual?" – Yep – almost done now- it’s time to go out and play in his kingdom for the day.

Prayer- Lord, thanks for your time- time to reflect- time to listen- time to pray and time to go--- Amen

Luke 3.1-20-In many different ways John preached the good news to the people.

Ezekiel 40-41-This is a reminder that the LORD is constantly watching over his temple

Isaiah 62-People of Jerusalem, open your gates!

John 21.20-25-and we know that his testimony is true.

Revelation 1.1-7-Look! He is coming with the clouds…

Psalm 29-May the LORD give strength to his people!

"Do you want to play a game?"- Seems like Christmas is a time to play games with family and friends. Time to stop, talk and play. It’s one way that I see Jesus birth alive in others. To see Jesus in the play of games. Life-Conversation and celebration of a slower time- time to stop and play a game- knowing all along that Jesus is present -–watching over- playing within this game of life in which we live- playing in the pain- playing in the sorrow- playing in the sadness- but playing along side of you and me all the way- open the gates of my heart and welcome you in the playing of games- I know that Jesus in present in my life- that is my testimony- he is real- but I also know that this isn’t all there is- things will change- change dramatically- Jesus will come again in the clouds to bring about that change- just like God existed with the Israelites in the cloud- Jesus – God will return once again to change things- and then all his people will be strong and fulfilled and changed into whatever God chooses to change us into- I guess that will be the end of this game and the fulfillment of a new fantastic game to come—"Do you want to play a game?" – Yes- Jesus- I’ll play with you all day long.

Prayer- Lord, Let’s play! -- Amen

Hebrews 12.1-3-looking to Jesus…

Psalm 118-for his steadfast love endures forever

"It’s good to worship with you."- A friend in church- It’s good to worship – it really is- to worship a baby- to take that baby into my arms and praise God- God came to me in flesh and blood- God so awesome that he lets me take him into my arms- to love him- to praise him- seems backwards- but God takes me in his arms too- loves me and cares for me and gives me all I need to live- God gives his Spirit to me- the Spirit takes control of me and I love others- look at Stephen- worshiping God- to the very end- full of grace and power- showing the great signs among the people- Stephen worships God- looking to Jesus on his throne- Jesus with a love that lasts forever- God who feeds even the birds and the animals will so much more care and love me- "It’s good to worship with you."- Yea – it’s good – real real good!!

Prayer- Lord – all praise and glory belongs to you- we worship the King! -- Amen

Luke 2.1-20-All at once an angel came down to them from the Lord, and the brightness of the Lord’s glory flashed around them.

Prayer- Lord thank you for the grace of Your Light! - Amen

December 24th People Reflections

Saturday 12/24/2005

Luke 1.57-80-You will tell his people that they can be saved when their sins are forgiven.

Ezekiel 35-36-I will take away your stubborn heart and give you a new heart and a desire to be faithful.

Isaiah 59-My people, I promise to give you my Spirit and my message.

Titus 2.11-14-For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all

Luke 2.1-14-you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger

Psalm 77-Your way was through the sea, your path, through the mighty waters

"I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season with your family in Ohio."- Written words – not spoken- words that are very insincere- sarcastic and awful when they are put in context with the remainder of the letter. Words from a stubborn heart- making my heart stubborn too- words that are sinful that beget more sin-but God’s way is different from all this- as humans we sin against each other and create more sin- I think God knows this- I think God sent his Son – as a baby – poor and lowly- not high and mighty- not abusing his position of power to destroy life- as humans we tend to work our way up- and as we get higher and higher in society – sometimes we think we have earned this position and use the power of our position to rule and sin against others- just because we can- just to feel good- but I don’t think that’s what God’s intentions are- Jesus-baby in a manger- poor- lowly- yet the most powerful person ever- creating and giving life- forgiving salvation to all who don’t deserve it- takes away my stubborn heart and gives me freely a desire to be faithful- forgives my sins and saves me from myself- from my desire for revenge- gives me the correct Spirit- a sincere spirit- honest and not sarcastic- in Jesus context of the letter of life there is hope, joy, love and salvation- there is grace and salvation for all- yea – Jesus – wrapped in bands of cloth lying in a manger- some thirty years later in history – he would once again be wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a tomb- placed there by my sarcasm, my sin, my revenge, my hate – but this isn’t the way of Jesus- his way is sincere and loving – his way is through the sea- through the mighty waters of baptism where the life of God is given to all- just like his baptism started a ministry that through the darkness of this world –he would bring life and salvation- from his beginnings in strips of cloth to the tomb in strips of cloth to his resurrection – "I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season with your family in Ohio."- We can be so cruel to each other- No- I won’t have a wonderful holiday season in Ohio due to this greeting- but I will have a wonderful Christmas season in Ohio due to a loving God who came to save us all – from ourselves and each other.

Prayer- Lord, on this the eve of your birth- be born in my life and remove my feelings of hatred and bless me with your love that I may take it to all the world. -- Amen

Isaiah 58-Shout the message! Don’t hold back.

Isaiah 62.6-12-See, your salvation comes

Luke 2.25-35-he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.

Psalm 7-in you I take refuge

"I remember when it was a Meijers store."- Memory- mine wasn’t all that great- maybe some vague image but not that one- memory- I see elderly with failing memory- but I also see that glimmer of light- that recollection of a specific Christmas carol- God’s light within more than without- memory- the light of Christ shining so brightly within John and Luella and others – and you can feel the praise of God coming out strong – from deep within the heart- yea- they are God’s sheep and he will cake care of them- in their own way- with that memory and bright light within their hearts I can hear the message of God shouting out loud and clear- I can see God in them – even before death- for they have seen the Messiah and take refuge in him- the light of Christ brightly beaming within their hearts- "I remember when it was a Meijers store." – and I remember Jesus that light within my heart- memory or not- his presence is real.

Prayer- Lord, burn your memory deep and to the core of my heart and let your light brightly shine forth in me to the world I walk in this day. -- Amen

December 22nd People Reflection

Thursday 12/22/2005

Luke 1.1-25-And because of John, parents will be more thoughtful of their children.

Ezekiel 33-So listen to what I say, then warn them for me.

Isaiah 57-I am here to help those who are humble and depend only on me.

Psalm 111-His praise endures forever

John 11.17-27, 32-35-When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him…

Psalm 124-Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

"I can’t concentrate because I don’t know where I left my meter." – One of the tradesmen- worrying about where he may have left his meter- a measuring device that helps him troubleshoot and repair equipment- and tool needed for his trade and line of work- I think John the Baptist was a tool needed for God’s line of work- someone to announce the coming of Jesus- the coming of God in flesh into this world- what if John were lost?- I think God would find another meter- another measuring device for God’s people- god needed John to measure the hearts of all of us- to turn us from our sins- to get in our face and show us that we need forgiveness- so it was and is important to listen to John – to hear his warning- in that warning and the realization that we need a God- we will in turn warn future generations to live and believe in God- to turn from our selfish ways and realize that our only hope is in God- that each of us must remain humble and depend only on God- in this proclamation we will be more thoughtful towards our children and care for their bodies and their souls- we will praise God forever and when we see Jesus coming we will run to meet him- because Jesus will come to each person- sometimes we recognize this and run to him and sometimes he may sneak up on us- but through some person like John in our lives – some measuring device – God will work his way into and through each one of us – "I can’t concentrate because I don’t know where I left my meter." – That meter will measure my life and announce Jesus presence now and forever.

Prayer- Lord, let me hear the announcement of your coming- let me run to you as you approach and let me proclaim my total dependence and trust and faith to you to all the world. -- Amen

December 21st People Reflection

Wednesday 12/21/2005

Colossians 3.18-4.18-Do your work willingly, as though you were serving the Lord himself, and not just your earthly master.

Ezekiel 31-32-Don’t be arrogant or proud of myself-God will chop you down like a tree

Isaiah 56-my saving power will be seen everywhere on earth

John 14.1-7-No one comes to the Father except through me.

Revelation 21.1-7-See, the home of God is among mortals.

Psalm 126-The LORD has done great things for us

"The chain is not stainless steel."- The chain in a hoist- it must be stainless steel to withstand the effects of the acid in the dipping tanks. It needs to be a special chain for a special purpose- This chain can not be proud or arrogant- it is in a harsh environment and has a tough job to do- it must be stainless so that it will be safe from the acid of the world it works in- the stainless steel chain has a tough job- but it needs to work like it is working for God- the one who gives it the composition needed to survive in the world in which it exists- you see this stainless steel chain is stainless because there is a God so great that he came into the harsh environment of this chain and lived there to see what type of chain was needed- God did a great thing and saved the life of this chain by making it stainless steel- and God’s saving power is seen throughout the world of this stainless steel chain- God gives the armor to exist and live in this world- "The chain is not stainless steel."- Somehow I think God will change all that and make this chain just what it needs to be.

Prayer- Lord, thank you for giving me all I need to live in this harsh environment- you have made my world a blessed and loving place. -- Amen

December 20th People Reflection

Tuesday 12/20/2005

Colossians 2.20-3.17-Love is more important than anything else. It is what ties everything completely together.

Ezekiel 29-30-I will make the people of Israel strong…

Isaiah 55-If you are thirsty, come and drink water!…Mountains and hills will sing as you pass by, and trees will clap.

Ephesians 4.11-16-as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

Matthew 6.19-24-You cannot serve God and wealth.

Psalm 99-They cried to the LORD, and he answered them.

"This piece of fuzz keeps floating back to me."- Fuzz or hair or something like that- it’s static electricity- to get it to float away- Sarah had to get some separation from herself- then it finally fell to the ground- probably stuck to the dog forever now. Reminds me of the passage on love- love ties everything together- makes things work- it also attaches itself to good- wants to stick to good- just like the fuzz- love makes strong- God made the people of Israel strong- after suffering and separation in Babylon- even in the desert- God attracted the Israelites back to the Promised Land and Jerusalem- an attraction with love in the center- with love the body of Christ is built up- it is strengthened- in love God answers our prayers when we cry to him in pain or anguish- and love doesn’t take into account wealth- love itself is wealth- not the wealth we think of in a worldly sense- but love is the wealth in an everlasting sense- but the best image of love today for me is in baptism- in the life-giving water that God lovingly gave each one of us- if you are thirsty – drink!- and then even the mountains and hills will see God’s love in you giving you life and happiness- yea- even the mountains and hills will clap and sing as you pass by- now there is a great applause for the love of God- "This piece of fuzz keeps floating back to me."—Yea- and the love of God keeps coming to me- day after day in rebirth and the joy of my baptismal promise of life-giving water and love from the creator of the universe- Now there is something to clap and sing about- Let that fuzz come back to me and always stick to me – forever and ever.

Prayer- Lord- send your love to stick to me- let me share your love to the world I walk in this day and clap and sing every time I see your love pass by. -- Amen

Romans 7.14-25-Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Psalm 3-Deliverance belongs to the LORD

"Phoebe come back here!"- Phoebe the puppy visiting at Mom’s house- the dog would explore- she was always being scolded for looking into the wrong places- sometimes I think I’m like Phoebe- but God calls me back to where I should be- he does this through Jesus and the Spirit- so that the universe has no power over me- because Jesus died for me – to save me – to promise victory in the end- wretched that I am- exploring places I shouldn’t – God loves me enough to save me from myself- and this salvation belongs to him- nothing I do- in this I know the God is God and I give myself and love to him. "Phoebe come back here!"- Yea- here I come!

Prayer- Lord, forgive me and call me back when I stray. -- Amen

1 Corinthians 15.50-57-Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

Psalm 130-I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope

"I can’t find a thing in this purse."- A lady who stopped by the bench I was sitting at to use it to dig through her purse for money to give to her daughters. We look for God- we dig in our world – we know he is present in this world- but we look- like we lost something- and then – there he is- in a stable- in the bottom of the purse with all the lint and junk- that’s how Jesus came years ago- at the bottom of the heap- he didn’t need to – he was God after all- but Jesus did come to us- as a human and he died- he was wounded and crushed by all the junk I pile on top of him in my purse of life- he took on the punishment of my sin- the things I think are more important than him I place on top of him in my purse and Jesus takes it all on- then when I need him- I dig- and there he is- at the bottom- but as I take him out – I realize that now Jesus is the most important thing I could every want or receive- the mystery at the bottom of my purse becomes my very life- as I take Jesus out and give him to my friends, and relatives- give him to the world- I realize that he gave his all for me and everyone- he gives me life to give to others- and I will not die- but in the twinkling of an eye- that moment I give myself and Jesus to the world- that moment I hear a trumpet call and I am changed- I feel his love flow in me and through me to those that I give Jesus to- my soul lives on in hope and love of a gift from the bottom of my purse – given to me and given to the world in and through me- "I can’t find a thing in this purse." – I think that gift buried in the bottom of that purse found me and changed me forever.

Prayer- Lord, let me pull you out of the bottom of my purse of life- accept the love you freely died for and gave to me and give it freely to those in this world I meet today. -- Amen

Ezekiel 24-and they will know that I am the LORD

Isaiah 52-The LORD God of Israel will lead and protect you from enemy attacks.

Isaiah 6.1-7-yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!

Psalm 76-Glorious are you, more majestic than the everlasting mountains.

"That’s not how you are supposed to shop!"—My girls trying to tell me how to shop- that waste your time shopping- looking randomly stuff- that’s how they say you are supposed to shop! – Whew! – I’m not sure I get that! – anyway sometimes I think God shows us how to live – how to have faith- how to be his child – but I don’t get it- I wander around shopping- just looking – and then I realize that God has provided for all I need anyway- I don’t even need to shop- I can stop all that nonsense and praise God forever and ever because he has taken care of me forever and ever- I just need to realize all this and accept his graceful gift and be free to see him where I can’t believe I’m seeing him- right here with me- more glorious than the everlasting mountains- a mystery that has been revealed- a God that protects me and saves me –I wonder if many years ago the people knew that the baby before their eyes in poor living conditions was the Savior- I’ll bet most didn’t – but there were a few that did- and look how many there are today that realize that God is with us—"That’s not how you are supposed to shop!"- Hey – I don’t even need to shop- The real gift is right here with me- I need to advertise- not shop!

Prayer- Lord Jesus- I love you and thank you for your loving care of all creation. -- Amen

December 16th People Reflection

Friday 12/26/2005

Philippians 3-But Christ has shown me that what I once thought was valuable is worthless.

Ezekiel 23-and you will know that I am the LORD God

Isaiah 51-my saving power will never end.

2 Samuel 7.1-11, 16-the LORD will make you a house…

Matthew 21.18-22-Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.

Psalm 95-Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving

"I remember making this one at church." – The girls talking about ornaments they were putting on the Christmas tree. It reminds me of David and how he wanted to build a house for God. David had built a place for himself and then he realized that God still dwelt in a tent and wanted to build a temple for God. But God turned it all around- he would have a temple whenever he wanted one but God showed that he was the one building a house- a house for David and all God’s people- God was making them a house- a home- God decorates us with his gifts- I don’t decorate God—so now what David once thought was the thing to do for God – what he once thought was valuable is worthless in God’s sight- and Christ does the same for me day after day-what I once think is what I think God wants is not what he wants like what I thought- God wants me to give my life to him – God wants me! – and he sent his Son to get me – to save me with an eternal power – a saving power that will never end- and in this I KNOW who God is- and I come to God everyday – repenting – humble- and very very thankful- for in prayer God responds with love. "I remember making this one at church." – Yea- a decoration- a personal accomplishment- but in that making we realize that God turned it all around- I am not decorating God – I’m not even docorating a Christmas tree- through the action of making that ornament- God gave me gifts that he intended to use all along.

Prayer- Lord, I offer my ornaments to you with praise and thanksgiving and stand in awe of how you have decorated me with your gifts. I will display your gifts this day and every day in my life. -- Amen

December 15th People Reflections

Thursday 12/15/2005

Philippians 2.12-30-Try to shine as lights among the people of this world, as you hold firmly to the message that gives life.

Ezekiel 21-22-I, the LORD, have spoken.

Isaiah 50-Each morning he awakens me eager to learn his teaching

Luke 1.47-55-for the Mighty One has done great things for me

Matthew 2.1-12-God and search diligently for the child

Psalm 105-let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice

"Car!!!"- Steph yelling at me because she thought I was going straight at the stop sign and about to hit a car when I was really turning. Makes me think of how excited I should be with Jesus in my life- I should shout to others "Jesus!!!" and point out his presence here and now- in my life- in this world- shine a light in this world that clearly shows his presence – amplify his Words in this world- the LORD has spoken- look to the Word and reflect on Jesus message from day to day- jump out of bed each morning eager to learn his teaching- because Jesus has done great things- awesome things for all people- I will really not need to search all that far for this child – because there he is- right in front of me – about to run over me- and his presence makes me rejoice- "Car!!!" – yea that’s it—"Jesus!!" – can’t you see him??

Prayer- Lord, thank you for your ever presence in my life- up close and right there in my face. Jesus!!! I shout your love to the world! -- Amen

December 14th People Reflection

Wednesday 12/14/2005

Philippians 2.1-11-Christ encourages you, and his love comforts you. God’s Spirit unites you, and you are concerned for others. Now make me completely happy!

Ezekiel 20-I felt sorry for them and could not let them die in the desert.

Isaiah 49-The LORD chose me and gave me a name before I was born.

Psalm 89.1-4, 19-26-with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations

Hebrews 2.5-18-I will put my trust in him.

Psalm 31-Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.

"Don’t give yourself so much credit."- Well, I wasn’t giving myself any of the credit- just fearing some words I had said were coming true in some way I couldn’t understand. But sometimes I come off as giving myself credit when there is no credit at all. And especially in this situation the credit all goes to God. I was looking at things a little differently- and it was pointed out that God works for the good in situations that seem to me to be heading towards the bad. Christ encourages, loves, comforts and unites our spirits so that we are concerned for others. This is what makes God happy. God feels sorry for us in the deserts of our lives and comes to save us. God is so compassionate and considerate that he thought of us- called us- named us even before we were born- then God puts his words into the mouths of other people so that my eyes will open and really hear him speak- in love and compassion – through all generations with and about his faithfulness and love- "Don’t give yourself so much credit."- Yea- you’re I right! – I hear God speak –I feel his love- and I put my trust in him- into his hands will I give my all and my spirit- for he is faithful and has redeemed me.

Prayer- Lord, keep me humble. I love and trust you and give you all the credit. -- Amen

December 13th People Reflection

Tuesday 12/13/2005

Philippians 1.12-30-Not only do you have faith in Christ, but you suffer for him.

Ezekiel 19-She taught one of them to hunt, and he learned to eat people.

Isaiah 48-He led us through a desert and made water flow from a rock to satisfy our thirst.

Psalm 94-But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge.

Matthew 25.1-13-Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Psalm 114-who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water

"No, you are not allowed to move backwards."- A Father and Son playing checkers. Makes me think of my relationship with God and sometimes others too. I look backwards and learn from my past but I don’t move backwards. God gives me reflection and memory. He gives me history. He gives me a story in my past. But while I look backwards and reflect on God in my life – I move forwards. I may look back at the desert- where I have traveled but I look forward the assurance of hope in God to a future- all the while I live in the present- the present where feeling and emotion and love and thanksgiving all exist- here and now- in the present where I feel that cool touch of water that God has provided from a rock on my dry lips and parched tongue- in the present where I wade in the pool of baptismal water from the rock- in the spring of water I feel God’s presence in that baptismal water day after day- I live in the present where God is with me and is my stronghold and refuge- my protection – and there is danger in the present- there are those who were raised to "eat people" – to consume all my energy and sap my strength- but I live in the present trusting in God’s protection from people who would harm me. "No, you are not allowed to move backwards."- I look backwards with thanks and praise- I live in the present with God by my side with thanks and praise- I look to the future and trust and hope in all of God’s promises--- no need to move backwards now- God will lead me forwards.

Prayer- Lord, lead me forwards this day- be present in my life and let me rejoice in all you have given- give and will give to come- I love you. -- Amen

December 12th People Reflection

Monday 12/12/2005

Philippians 1.1-11-I pray that your love will keep on growing and that you will fully know and understand how to make the right choices.

Ezekiel 18-The lives of all people belong to me

Isaiah 47-Surrender your royal power and sit in the dirt…

Psalm 110-He will drink from the stream by the path; therefore he will lift up his head.

Deuteronomy 6.1-9-You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

Psalm 78.1-8, 38-39, 69-72-Yet he, being compassionate, forgave their iniquity, and did not destroy them

"Hey, it works now!"- Steph talking about her MP3 player after I told her to replace the battery. Her contention was that the battery she just put in was new too. I think about God’s love and batteries- how if I have a fresh battery – the right one- a good battery my love will keep growing- how with God’s battery in my heart I really belong to him- because without this gift from God I would not be able to function- even if I became rich, powerful or famous – without this gift of life from God I would be nothing- useless- and with this battery of life from God I will love God with all – with everything I have- because I would not exist at all if it weren’t for God—yea God loves me so much – he changes out the new-bad battery in my heart and being compassionate forgives me and saves me and keeps me going- I will gain my strength from that stream by the path of my life and watch for opportunities to renew others and to be renewed by God- "Hey, it works now!"

Prayer- Lord, replace my worn out battery – forgive me- renew me- and send me with your love in my heart into your kingdom- with a new, fresh battery. -- Amen

Ezekiel 14-15-I, the LORD God, have spoken

Isaiah 44-You were in my care even before you were born.

Isaiah 61.1-4, 8-11-I will make an everlasting covenant with them

Philippians 4.4-9, 19-again I will say, Rejoice.

Psalm 119.33-40-Give me understanding…

"Thanks for the good lunch."- Taking the guys out for lunch to celebrate Christmas- to celebrate life with each other and to celebrate life given to each of us through a baby born and a life given years ago- a life that was given to me even before I was born- a life with an everlasting covenant- a life that beckons me to see understanding of God’s awesome gift of grace – a live the makes me rejoice every day. – "Thanks for the good lunch." And thanks for the gift of life!

Prayer- Lord, give me joy and life this day! – I give you all the glory and thanks. -- Amen

Saturday 12/10/2005

Ephesians 5.21-33-Honor Christ and put others first.

Ezekiel 16-Then I solemnly promised that you would belong to me and that I, the LORD God, would take care of you.

Isaiah 45-The clay doesn’t ask, "Why did you make me this way? Where are the handles?"

1 Thessalonians 5.16-24-Do not quench the Spirit

Luke 12.13-21-for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.

Psalm 102-your name endures to all generations

"How long did it take you to get home Thursday night?"- Snow at rush hour causing delays in getting home. God will bring me home someday- but where is home?- what is home?- I think maybe home is where I belong to Christ- home is where I am taken care of- my needs are met- where I interact in love with others- where passion exists and the Spirit is never quenched- home isn’t a place to store my possessions or a material place- but a place with God- no need for materials that bring status- because my status is my relationship with God- at home- where I know that God is my creator- the potter and I am the clay- how long will it take me to get home- I guess we’ll see- but for now I will still go home to Christ each and every day and dwell with him in my heart and my life.

Prayer- Lord- take me home in your care and love- Amen

Sunday 12/11/2005

Ephesians 6-Gladly serve your masters, as though they were the Lord himself, and not simply people.

Ezekiel 17-Someday, I, the LORD, will cut a tender twig from the top of a cedar tree, then plant it on the peak of Israel’s tallest mountain, where it will grow strong branches and produce large fruit.

Isaiah 46-I created you. I will carry you and always keep you safe.

John 1.6-8; 19-28-Among you stand one whom you do not know

Mark 1.1-8-The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and unite the thong of his sandals.

Psalm 14-The LORD looks down form heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.

"I don’t think God meant for us to struggle." – Yea- I agree now that I have thought about it- but I do believe sometimes God does mean for us to struggle in our lives- we live in a fallen world – pain caused by our own sinfulness- God didn’t create that world- I did- God created a world without struggle- but now that I’m in this world- God has meant for me to struggle- struggle with life just like Adam and Eve were sent out of the garden to struggle- but as I struggle I realize that God has cut a tender twig from the top of that tree years ago- and planted it for me to see- Jesus my Savoir- the one who has even now struggled for me and with me- the one who created me and keeps me safe- the one who is with me and stands before me when many times I don’t even recognize him- the one who humbles me and is so much more worthy than I- the one who came down from heaven to take on my struggle- the one who I will gladly serve- "I don’t think God meant for us to struggle."- Well maybe and maybe not- but I know that the struggle is over and the victory has been one- and not by me- but by one who came to take on my struggle and to get me through it all. Thanks be to God!

December 8th People Reflection

Thursday 12/8/2005

Ephesians 4.17-32-Let the Spirit change your way of thinking and make you into a new person.

Ezekiel 12-13-They are like workers who think they can fix a shaky wall by covering it with paint.

Isaiah 43-When you cross deep rivers, I will be with you, and you won’t drown.

Psalm 126-Then our mouth was filled with laughter…

Matthew 16.13-17-But who do you say that I am?

Psalm 119-169-176-give me understanding according to your word

"The Spirit is in me and gives understanding."- A conversation with a friend- a realization that God is present – in us- with us and opens our minds to understanding we need as we need it- just like in Ephesians- I must let the Spirit change my way of thinking- then when I give myself over to God will God make me into a new person- God is present within and works his way out- changing and renewing my mind along the way- even when I have to cross the deep rivers of life- God is within me helping me – guiding me and won’t let me drown- God is in my boat- or maybe I’m in his boat- because I have been also told that I am a part of the body of Christ- so God is in me and I am in him- just like communion- Christ becomes a part of my being- his body and blood becomes part of my body and blood- he is in me and I am part of that larger body of Christ distributed to the entire congregation- Christ gives me understanding according to the Word- that Word that existed at creation- that Word that gives life- that Word that died on a cross for me to save me from myself and sin and death- that Word that gives understanding- that Word that frees me to be filled with the relief of joy and laughter for what that Word has done for me- it’s not cheap either- it’s not just window dressing or paint on a wall- that Word is a solid foundation- it is the rock that holds the wall together- the mortar and the fix for sin and death- "The Spirit is in me and gives understanding."- But who do you say that I am? – Who do YOU say???- I think maybe the Messiah – that Creative Word of life and love and salvation.

Prayer-Lord, send your Word into me- through me- and throughout me to live, breath, love and serve you and all the world. Grant me the understanding I need today for the work you have prepared for me in your Kingdom.-- Amen

December 7th People Reflection

Wednesday 12/7/2005

Ephesians 4.1-16-Christ has generously divided out his gifts to us.

Ezekiel 10-11-But for now, I will be with you wherever you are, so that you can worship me.

Isaiah 42-Tell the whole world to sing a new song to the LORD!

Psalm 147.1-12-his understanding is beyond measure

Revelation 22.1-6-Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

Psalm 84-How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!

"Middies!"—A bunch of girls at a bowling lane with one big cheering shout just before the game was to begin. They bowl individually and as a team. Some are good under pressure and others may fold- Christ provides for his church like this team- gives out gifts generously- beyond what we need or can imagine- and he will go with us to the "away" games too- he gives us understanding when we need it- understanding that goes beyond measure- cause we will never understand it all- we aren’t capable of it and probably don’t need to anyway- but Christ provides all we need- he feeds us with the crystal clear waters of our baptism in the ever-flowing water from the river straight from the throne of God- and this water nourishes us for service in his kingdom- allows us to daily produce fruit for his kingdom and the healing of his creation- yea- that throne- that dwelling place of God- but then I think how God is always with me- and his dwelling place in with me- I in him and he in me – wherever I go- and I realize how lovely this place is- "Middies"- yea- sing a new song and shout it to the world- our God is great!

Prayer- Lord, hear my cheer of praise for your gracious love this day and let the world know through me that you are Lord and King and Savior of all! -- Amen

December 6th People Reflection

Tuesday 12/6/2005

Ephesians 3-God did this according to his eternal plan.

Ezekiel 8-9-Now get busy!

Isaiah 41-I was there at the beginning; I will be there at the end.

Psalm 146-The LORD will reign forever

1 Peter 2.1-12-in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light

Psalm 111-His praise endures forever

"Always give thanks."- Advice from a mother- always give thanks- and thanks first to God- wonderful advice- God was there at the beginning and will be there at the end- "Always give thanks."- God has an eternal plan for his people- "Always give thanks."- I know that God rules all things- but he gives me the freedom of choice too- he let’s some things just happen- doesn’t interrupt the flow of things- and in this freedom there is risk but also blessing- "Always give thanks."- God reveals the light of his Son Jesus in the darkest times of my life- a marvelous light that I will "Always give thanks." – I will praise this creator and giver of life all my life and "Always give thanks."- And when I have praised God- listening to his voice- I know that the time will come when he decides to use me and commands me to – Now get busy! – and even and especially in this – I will "Always give thanks." – yea give thanks to God- what great advice- somehow I think I hear the voice of God speaking a message through the generations of a friends family – "Always give thanks." – Thanks be to God!

Prayer- Lord, I "Always give thanks." To you for all life and blessings. Thanks be to God! -- Amen

December 5th People Reflection

Monday 12/5/2005

Ephesians 2- Christ is the one who holds the building together and makes it grow into a holy temple for the Lord.

Ezekiel 6-7-Ezekiel, son of man, tell the people of Israel that I am saying…

Isaiah 40-those who trust the LORD will find new strength.

Psalm 122-Let us go to the house of the LORD!

Matthew 13.3-9, 18-23-Hear then the parable….

Psalm 147-but the LORD takes pleasure in those who hope in his steadfast love

"She would read the Bible and write special notes to people." – A person in Sunday School speaking of someone in the past who was caring and loving towards others. I think this caring and loving that Jesus brought into this world- that Jesus demonstrated so powerfully for all people is the glue or better yet the nails that hold this church together – it holds the church building together and makes the temple of faith grow from day to day- both in each person and in the church as a whole- this powerful love, compassion and caring allows us and makes us bold to go to the house of the LORD! – It makes us want to run to his church- to live in his church and to feel his powerful, love, caring, compassion and grace- we run to church to hear the parables that reflect life of love through Jesus- we take great pleasure in his steadfast love and find new strength- and we hear people just like this lady – through voice and written notes and through a multitude of ways the love of Jesus shine and shout throughout the temple into the world- "She would read the Bible and write special notes to people."- The WORD made flesh and is with us—even in some notes from an old lady reflecting on her Bible.

Prayer- Lord, let me shout your love, compassion and grace to a dark world today. -- Amen

December 4th People Reflection

Sunday 12/4/2005

Ephesians 1-Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people.

Ezekiel 4-5-I, the LORD, have spoken.

Psalm 150-His deeds are wonderful, too marvelous to describe.

Mark 1.1-8-The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Romans 12.1-10-Let love be genuine…

Psalm 115-trust in the LORD!

"We need to set a deadline."- A response about some tasks that needed done from a meeting I attended yesterday. Makes me think of how God already has the deadlines taken care of- Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people. – Now there is no way I can understand that statement- I live in a world with time- time is a gift from God- but then I see and read this and realize that God is beyond time- he can be with me and take care of me before I even know I exist- so when I read again – I, the LORD, have spoken- it makes me really really really want to listen- because God can speak – through, before and beyond time as I know it- God can do things so marvelous – like sending Jesus into my life before I exist- things too marvelous to describe- because they just don’t make any sense to me a mortal person- In Mark- the beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ- well if I look to the Ephesians passage I begin to realize that this beginning was before I even existed- I think???—or did I exist back then and not know it???- doesn’t make sense- so because so much doesn’t make sense- not do I really believe I can make much sense out of it- I must trust in God and let the love he shows me – the love he gives me- be genuine and show that same love to all I meet. – "We need to set a deadline." – Do we??? Or has that already been decided??- Maybe we just respond in love and do the work.

Prayer- Lord, send me today in love to do your work- regardless of the deadline. -- Amen

December 3rd People Reflection

Saturday 12/3/2005

Galatians 6-All that matters is that you are a new person.

Ezekiel 2-3-The LORD said, "Ezekiel, son of man, I want you to stand up and listen."

Psalm 149-Shout praises to the LORD!

2 Peter 3.8-15a-regard the patience of our Lord as salvation

Luke 1.39-45-And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me?

Psalm 150-Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!

"Do you want to play cribbage at the coffee shop?"- Bryan asking me out for a game, some coffee and conversation. Sometimes we need to get together- to talk about life- to talk about this adventure God has placed us in- we need to escape in a game- be a little competitive – but the real point is the conversation and relationship we have- and it’s the same with my relationship with God- sometimes I need to go to God to relax – to talk about this adventure he has for me- to become a new person- to put off my old ways and refocus on what God has intended for me- sometimes I need to meet God and stand up and listen to him- and it’s funny the different ways I meet God- I wonder if Elizabeth was amazed how Jesus came into her life- Jesus comes to Elizabeth in the womb of Mary- Jesus comes to John while he is still in the womb of Elizabeth and he recognizes Jesus! – and neither one of them (Jesus or John) – have even been born- John praises the glory of Jesus from the womb of Elizabeth- talk about some timeless patience on John’s part- I’ll bet he just couldn’t wait to be born- to be used by God to introduce the Savior of the world- and once John took his first breath until his last – he was praising Jesus—shouting praises from the wilderness of his life and the wilderness of his world- "Do you want to play cribbage at the coffee shop?" – yes, Lord Jesus- I’ll play cribbage all my life with you.

Prayer- Lord, it’s time to run outside and play today- Amen

Galatians 5.16-26-God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled.

Ezekiel 1-I realized I was seeing the brightness of the LORD’s glory!

Psalm 148-All of you angels, and all who serve him above, some and offer praise.

Isaiah 40.1-11-Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places plain.

John 10.22-30-My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.

Psalm 13-But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

"I need prayer." – A friend in need- myself in need- going to God in prayer- together- and individually- mad , afraid, repentant, a whole range of emotions—also prayer in a timeless sense- a prayer that goes beyond any words that can be said- a prayer that goes beyond any timeframe that exists- when entering into prayer time becomes eternal- words change to emotions and spirit- and God’s Spirit takes some of the upsetting emotions and makes them real but also adds some other emotions like loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled- it’s funny though how it doesn’t deny the mad and raged emotions- because the are just as real- I wonder if Ezekiel was entering this place with some of his visions of God- when maybe in some form of prayer- he saw the brightness of God’s glory- he heard all the angels and those above offer praise to God- prayer unites us with those past and present- things we can’t even see- prayer unites us – and it most importantly unites us with God- we are in relationship with God- even in our tough times- our sad times – our mournful times- God is there with us- not as an instant cure- but as a faithful, friend – there with us in our time of need- and slowly – sometimes real slowly- things level out- the mountains become level- the hills are made low- the valleys of life are lifted up and the uneven ground becomes level and the rough places plain- God through and in our prayer- does answer- but maybe not just like we think he should- and usually not as fast as we think he should- but he does- in his time- not mine- and if I pause long enough I will hear the shepherd calling his sheep- and I will see the glory of the death of Jesus on a cross that grants me eternal life through grace- a life that will never perish – and I build trust and love in Jesus my Savior- and in this timeless prayer – I can pause and see salvation and rejoice in it – salvation for all who choose to accept this free gift and believe and have faith in God- "I need prayer." – Yea – don’t we all- and I think maybe it’s time we pray- together- for each other and with God presence all the time.

Prayer- Lord, "I need prayer." – Teach me how to pray and be with me always. -- Amen

Psalm 148-Praise the LORD!

"You look like George Jetson."- A nurse teasing me while I was on the treadmill for a stress test. I remember that scene- George walking his dog Astro on a treadmill outside their skyward home. He didn’t look very free like when I walk today- the scenery didn’t change like walks today can. But God has chosen me to be free- God chooses me to start fresh each and every day- to relive my baptism each day in all it’s glory. God give me his steadfast love and faithfulness day after day. The result of which is where righteousness and peace kiss each other. God frees me day after day to live in joy and grace in his kingdom. To serve him daily in my walk of life. In an ever changing world. With others whom I can unit and glorify God and praise him with all we have. "You look like George Jetson."—But this George is freed by a loving God – day after day.

Prayer- Lord, send me out today to love others in this walk of life you have placed me. -- Amen
